We play Rochdale at 12:15. At about 12:40 the Tour of Yorkshire will be hitting the roads of Barnsley. If you're going to the match, you'll miss it. If you're trying to get to the match then be aware that the tour comes in to town on the A61 Wakefield Road and leaves on the A635 Huddersfield Road. The tour is using a rolling road closure system and roads will be closed an hour before the tour is scheduled to arrive, so at the same time you're trying to get to the game, the two roads in to Barnsley from the north will be shut. As will Old Mill Lane, so you can't get down Burton Road. As well as the usual football crowd, you'll have thousands of people heading in to the centre for the race. Rochdale may still be in with a shot of a play-off place and despite their poor home attendances, they've got a good away following. If they are in with a chance, it could well be the biggest game in their history. Particularly as Chesterfield and Sheff Utd play one another. So if Chesterfield lose at home to Bristol City next week and Sheff Utd lose at relegation threatened Orient, while Rochdale win their next two home games, they'll know for certain a victory over us will assure them of a play-off place, whatever the result at Bramall Lane. Speaking of that game, South Yorkshire Police have to officiate that too as well as the chaos in Barnsley. Good luck every one.
Saturday is going to be awesome. It passes within 50 yards of my house not once but 3 times because it does a circuit once it gets in to York. Sunday on the other hand is going to be a nightmare and may will mean I don't make the game
All this, as well as having to find somewhere to store Keith Hill's planet-sized ego for the afternoon. Things are going to get messy.
I might come to York with the camera Saturday if it's nice weather. Sunday I am doing the Sportive (108km) which is part on the main course, part on roads near where I live. Monday I am mostly sleeping
On a serious note Jay .... I am wondering if the club is aware of this ? And with it being last game of the season, I guess there is no scope to change ko time, esp if there is something riding on the result.
Not too sure they'll be big crowds for the Tour de Yorkshire....seems very much a case of flog a dead horse to me. A part from the... its me and my bike against the world, while's wearing brightly coloured lycra.... gang. Don't think most people a flying ****
We come off M1 at J38, past Old Post Office pub, along Barnsley Rd and Huddersfield Rd and park behind Courthouse (although we were going to try the Mount for last game, street parking). We'll be getting there about 11, will we face any problems on the roads? I'm not local to Barnsley so any help welcome.
The last part of that route will be closed due to the Tour, but I'm not sure what time it will be closed from. If you're getting here for 11 I would say there is a very highly likely that it will be closed. I would suggest getting off at Junction 37 and coming into town that way.
Re: On a serious note Jay .... I believe, should Rochdale falter and have nothing to play for, like us, then it's possible to rearrange the fixture. However, if they're still in with a chance of the play-offs, however remote that chance may be, we have to kick off at the same time as all the other games.
You'll still face problems coming in that way, while parking in the courthouse is probably a complete no-no as the race comes up old mill lane, then eldon street, regent street, on church street and past the top of old mill lane, pretty much encircling that car park, so I would imagine all that section will be closed for hours. If you get off at Dodworth, come down Dodworth Road and park somewhere down there, before you get to tarn end roundabout. I wouldn't risk trying to bring your car in town at all.
