Plane crash in Columbia carrying a Brazilian club team to a Copa America match. Dozens dead, survivors with life changing injuries.
I think I heard earlier that they were heading to the final of the Copa Sudamericana - their equivalent of the Champions League final
Dreadful news whenever a plane crashes it somehow seems worse when you can connect to the victims like in this case a football team, as you say it brings back memories of Munich thoughts and prayers to those affected
Any loss of life or a life blighted with serious permanent injury is tragic but somehow it is more tragic when those involved are young professional sportsmen or women at the peak of their professional careers. Another Munich and one can only think of their families and friends and what they must be going through especially as they were on a 'high' and celebrating what should have been a fantastic occasion for the team and the important place that football holds in Brazilian culture. Awful news. It was a long way away but the common link of football suggests a minutes silence would be appropriate and should be held at all the weekend matches in the UK and Europe. Has EUFA or FIFA suggested anything like that?
A Brazillian said imagine it being Cork City or Dundalk in the Europa League final. That's how big it was these guys - the biggest match in the clubs existence so far.
Even worse it looks like it was caused by the plane running out of Fuel Somehow when it was clearly avoidable rather than just an unforeseeable component failure or freak weather this seems even worse It seems the plane ran out of fuel because of delays the pilot decided to chance it and hope he had enough rather than stop to refuel - seems unbelievable http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-38165757
Agreed, catastrophic and tragic error of judgement if true (which seems likely). You wonder how often he's made the same call and got away with it. You wonder how many others make the same call and get away with it.
