The chants just show a lack of education. Sheep.

Not really it's history which effected our families and communities.

Ok pal. Thanks for clarifying. sure your political point hit home and brought great shame on the individuals in Nottingham that broke the picket

Leicestershire was only a very small coalfield though. I think around 1,500 Notts miners stayed out on strike to the bitter end out of a 30,000 workforce. To make it more shameful, they did the same in 1926.

Do people shout 'Sieg Heil' when they come in contact with a German person?

I'm not sure, but some certainly sing the Dambusters theme.

You show no understanding of the area or the things that impact it. It's you who should perhaps study a little more and have empathy with those affected by the decimation of the miners and the mining industry in our glorious town.

Anytime you want to compare qualifications I'm more than happy to oblige btw.

I don't get why anyone's got an issue with our fans chanting scabs.

I turned up at Oakwell on a Friday a few weeks ago & within 2 minutes they were singing 'sign on, you'll never work again' & it was virtually the whole away end so it's fair game for me.

Why do you have to have lived through something to understand it & make comment on it? I've grown up with stories from my dad, uncle & two grandads about how much they suffered during the strike.

Virtually everyone from this area would've been effected somehow whether that's parents, grandparents, uncles & aunties, in laws etc. Some area's of Barnsley still haven't recovered today.

I guess I should take back my comments praising Norman Rimmington & calling him a legend. I mean after all, he's only been a kit man during my time following the club so how can I talk about something I wasn't alive for?

No, but I'm sure it's affected their families.

Thing is......they were scabs well before 1984.
Nottingham has historical record of being populated by people prepared to undermine working people's rights.
Only got to look at 1926 to realise this.
So it's not being childish or whatever - it's stating facts.

    So hey - a scabs a scab

At the end of the day, our match vs the Nottingham teams will always involve chants relating to the strike as so many people in our community were effected.

I'm 35, and while my dad was involved in it, I am too young to remember. That doesn't mean I wasn't effected, or that I still feel the effects(a close friend of my Dad's took his own life during the strike as he was in so much trouble money wise, but couldn't bear turning against his colleagues).

Also, the Forest fans aren't exactly innocent, with their "You'll Never Work Again" taunts...

Looking at it another way, it's just a derogatory name for an opposing team. The Sheffield clubs call each other the Pigs, but I've never seen a single fam animal at either ground(well, except that Tango Bloke at Hillsborough).

Why don't we do the same to Derby or Leicester? I live in South Derbyshire (right on the Leicestershire border) and most people round here support Derby or Leicester. The pits round here carried on working right through the strike and the area has had £millions spent on regeneration since then (The National Forest) more than has ever been spent in South Yorkshire. The UDM was formed here and their headquarters is still in Swadlincote. They deserve scab chants just as much as Notts, yet we've never done it.

I think it's more to do with the perception. Family members who were involved at the time says that although there were other area's involved in breaking the picket line/not supporting the strike, the news coverage focused on the Nottingham miners(they may be wrong though, and it may just be that the reports of the Nottingham miners have stuck in their mind).

It's like when someone mentions the strike, and they only associate it with Yorkshire, and to a lesser extent the North East(thanks to Billy Elliott). It was just as devastating for many area's of Wales, and if i'm correct, some areas of the South. But as the main press coverage was focussed on Yorkshire, it will forever be associated with us.

Err, The UDM had a self-imposed leadership from Notts (Silver fox) They took over the Notts Area NUM HQ at one point. Many Derbys miners were on strike particularly North Derbys, This thread crops up every time we play Forest and I suggest if those that don't get the scab chants by now butt out of the thread. Saddos. There are other more distasteful chants that hardly get a mention yet some on here seem to take umbrage against the Scab chant. Perhaps, they have another agenda? I'm a former miner And I don't' chant, simply because I tend not to chant anything at matches. Fekin unbelievable, complaining about Scab chants.

    Silver Birch surely?

I may have been wrong about where the UDM was formed, but here in South Derbyshire all the pits worked and there IS still a UDM office in Swadlincote. I knew a lad who was an NUM official, he was known as one of the "Dirty Dozen" and was ostracised by most people round here for years.

Personally, I have no problem with the odd scab chant but when it carries on for almost the entire match, as it did the last time I was at the City Ground, it just gets a bit tiresome. Particularly since I had a female friend (from Burton) with me at the time.
