I remember going there in the early 80's, old div 3 if I recall, we asked someone the way to the football ground and we ended up at the rugby ground, that shows how important football was in those days, bearing in mind they were attracting sub 5/6k crowds that shows where they came from, they are where they are because of Whelans money, once that dries up all together they could very well end up back there with smaller crowds.

didnt wigan become a proper football league club in 1978-79 (the same season we signed allan clarke and won promotion), and their old ground was springfield park ? look at how things have changed since then!

Yeah, as already posted, they've bought success for over a decade.

Looks like the funding has lessened or stopped and they're going back to square one, albeit with a nicer ground and slightly larger fan base.

I was reading some of their comments on facebook after they won promotion, and one or two seemed to think they would be spending again and on their way back to the top flight.

I think those fans have had a bit of reality check.

Think you're correct. They replaced Southport I believe.
Only went to Springfield Park once, early season 90/91 for a league cup game that we won 1-0. Last goal scored for Barnsley by Steve Cooper.

Some very interesting replies on that thread. Much more realistic than the stuff you read from the younger fans on facebook etc.

Only worry when you buy success like some do, is the newer fans won't be accustomed to anything different and will soon drift away.

I think wigan could have some tough times to come.

Good to see the respect shown by some of their fans. The poster who says we were the best team in that league since December is talking sense. The final league table doesn't tell the whole story.

A lot of Lancashire clubs seem to be in a bad way. It wasn't long ago Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan & Burnley were all in or around the Prem. I'm certain at least 4 were in together, now there's only Burnley in a stable position, just shows how overspending when you don't have the crowds to support it can damage you badly.

As much as I feel sorry for the fans they also got years of success based on finances they shouldn't have really had.
