I think it was during Mel's reign that two supporters ran on with a banner saying "Keep the best, sell the rest" and stood in front of the West before the coppers got them.

Covered in head to toe stonewash denim, a big tash and white trainers.

I've just learned a new word:

    microcosm
    ˈmʌɪkrə(ʊ)kɒz(ə)m/
    noun
    noun: microcosm; plural noun: microcosms
a community, place, or situation regarded as encapsulating in miniature the characteristics of something much larger.

I was going to say that it sums it up but I much prefer your word choice!

It was relevant in terms of my response to Red Rain.

This club has never been more community based than it is now.

That cup game at Newcastle was 1994.

I have no reason to make it up, mate. It was following a 1-0 home defeat to Reading, there were chants of sack the board and we want Dennis out.

I think you must be suffering from Stockholm syndrome if you genuinely believe that!!!

A lot of links between town and community were destroyed by how the club acted during the miners strike and never recovered. More were cut by the post administration franchise system. Modern football and footballers are as removed from the community as they have ever been. I'm not talking but community outreach work here which is a completely different thing and which Wayne abd the team are fantastic at.

Throw up Bradford's cheap STs and the board comes alive, 7 pages worth.

It's not been this alive since JLWBL used to post those birds on a Friday.

I'm sure you're right Whitey, I remember it. Was more out of deflation and frustration as the season petered out to nothing, I don't recall it as venomous as previous years but definitely happened. Started with the 3-3 draw v Ipswich when we were 3-0 up after 85 mins I think , and I also remember a capitulation away at Port Vale and a series of drab defeats or draws towards the end of the season. After beating Huddersfield at home in March, we didn't win any of our last 5 home games. We'd have gone into the play off positions had we beaten Ipswich.

In fairness to Dennis, and Wilson, I think they recognised that the squad needed fresh legs, and we had a turnover of players not too dissimilar to what might happen this year. Rammell went before end of season, then we let Archdeacon, O'Connell, Payton, Butler go , and Gary Fleming retired I think. In came Marcelle, Appleby, Thompson, Bosancic, Wilkinson, and Hendrie a few weeks into the season. We got Dave Regis and £100k for Rammell.

Definitely Swindon in the fog. Oxford game was in the autumn when we drew 5 or 6 on the spin.

That photo is shocking, I can't deny that. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. That will be addressed.

The shirt thing was explained to supporters a few times by the previous CEO. Not really my place to comment. But as a supporter I can understand the ire regards that issue. But again, I expect that's been addressed moving forward.

I won't say much else regards the season ticket offers etc, I've exhausted my own opinion on it and I stand by all that I said.

Cheers Whitey, can't say fairer than that :) Can I just point out that the egg isn't the only photo like that? Perhaps a closed season (or whenever) challenge for someone to jazz up the shop pics a bit?

It was proper incessant chanting (from a few hundred in the Ponty, which then spread to some in the East Lower) towards the end of the game and for a good few minutes afterwards.

It's not a challenge. It shouldn't have happened.

I understand why you say that clubs that are owned by the fans and managed by a committee that is elected by the fans can be classed as community clubs. To claim that Barnsley FC was in that position during John Dennis' stewardship is carrying that metaphor a little too far in my view. The club was certainly owned by a wider group of shareholders, but those shares were, in the main, inherited shares from the time the club became a limited company. The original investors were undoubtedly community investors, but can the same be said for shares inherited by future generations. I remember looking at the information at Companies House during the good years, and the directors were active in buying up shares from any shareholder willing to sell. John Dennis being one of the prime movers in that activity. So he was active in seeking to reduce shareholder diversity. I think that claims that John Dennis was responsible for the club being part of the community in those circumstances are a little far fetched.

I am old enough to remember the latter years of Joe Richards stewardship of the club. It was just before the club was saved by Geoff Buckle and Arnold Dennis, and I was still at school. The club looked like following Accrington Stanley into receivership and closure. The club appealed to the community for new investment. It needed £40,000 an offered £1 shares in the club to potential new investors. No-one came forward. The community was not willing to support its football club. Now there are probably very good reasons for that. Joe Richards was not well liked, despite his lofty position in the Football League hierarchy. I only bring up the story because of my belief that a community club is not only owner by its community, it is supported by its community. The community supports the club because it believes that it is an asset to its community. When Mr Cryne took over, he ensured that the club would always remain part of its community by jointly investing with Barnsley MBC in ownership of the land and buildings comprising the ground and training areas. This has two effects. It prevents the club signing up to any unaffordable loans even after he is no longer here to make sure that does not happen. But more than that, it put the ownership of the ground into community hands. In that respect, the club is even more a part of the community than is was under John Dennis. Nevertheless, I maintain that BFC is not a community club because the community in general does not feel any affinity or responsibility for the club. The community in general would be happy to walk away from the club if it was in trouble, and that for me is the test of a community club.

Absolutely disgusting. What is this based on?

Beyond me why you would wish to support a club whose supporters you hold in such low regard.

Your nearly right with the letter O, (because as well as the Swindon game which somebody has included a clip of), there was the foggy cup game against Oldham in 95-96. It was a draw and we were conned out of it at their place in the replay, thanks to the penalty that never should have been given.

Archdeacon's 'foul' on Gunnar Halle?? Impressive - he was about eight feet away from him.
