I'm thinking more of the type who have 25 buy to let properties up and down the country, which they have probably never seen. They have them managed by a third party who then arrange for them to be filled with housing benefit tenants. Hey presto, the tax payer then pays their mortgages and effectively buys them £1 to £2m worth of property.

    F-ing disgusting.

Edit - solution is no housing benefit tenants in properties with buy to let mortgages.

I was in Canada in 2007 when the credit crunch was just starting to hit the news. There was an interview with an American bloke who was in his 20s who had 100% mortgages on about 10-20 properties worth over $2 million between them. He was just about to hand them all back to the mortgage companies and declare himself bankrupt.

What would you do with the mass homelessness that would result of barring people who claim benefits from buy to let properties? How would it be policed? A rent cap at social housing level and mass investment in social housing along with progressive taxation on landlords with more than 3 properties seems the only answer to me.

Don't know Jim to be honest. I don't think it would be fair to apply any changes retrospectively as it would be unfair on the tenants when it's the landlords who should be targeted.

A mass investment in social housing is desirable but is clearly not a priority for this government.

Do you know what I don't care about? The junk babble that spews itself onto my screen as a result of your slow brain and fat fingers.

Overwhemling majority of landlords ive known wont accept 'DSS'.
    Got to be employed.
Those that do charge a 'premium'.

And i can understand why. Theres a marked difference in how the property was looked after if you compared the two.

Round where i live its as much private rented as it is private owned housing.

At a guess very few of these will be having social pay the rent.

I suspect most of the HB spent in the country will be in and around london.

My sister let her house to a housing association when she moved in with her boyfriend (Now husband) - total disaster the tenants trashed the place and upset the neighbours, cost her a fortune and several wasted weekends to get it back into a state it was even fit to sell - much more than the Housing association deposit. I can see why people charge a premium.
