Being the soppy git I am, feels like there should be something with a little bit of heart put into it for my 1000th post on here. So, here's how I feel as a Barnsley fan at the moment. Pretty bloody good actually. When you take a sideways look at the rest of football at our level, we have got it good. We have an ownership who have the best interests of the club and fans at heart and who are not prepared to risk us being plunged into turmoil. It seems like a family of staff, filled with local people, meaning we are something of an anachronism in the best possible way. Yet we have also modernised in the last few years to help us compete.bWe have finally found a model which can allow us to keep pace amidst the speculators and gamblers and subsidised failures in what is essentially the workhouse of the Greed League. Most of all, we have Hecky. I thank my lucky stars we have a man like him at the helm, a man who gets us as Barnsley folk and fans, a man who is one of us and genuinely has the club at heart. But also, he is a respected, adaptable, intelligent coach. You might argue it's a weakness of Barnsley people to get on with the job we're given with the minimum of fuss and little questioning of the bigger picture, but that's exactly what we need from a coach and exactly what Hecky does. Positivity and belief, whilst not abandoning realism, is what he infuses in all of us, not the self-pitying resignation we had under Hill. The football we play under him is exactly the type I enjoy watching - a high tempo, full blooded, quick paced game with plenty of excitement and no little flair. If he keeps up what he's doing, there'll inevitably be poachers that come sniffing, but I hope his wise perspective and the fact that the vultures elsewhere won't shirk with the cutlass can be enough to keep him here for years yet. He has something special at Barnsley and long may that last. As for the panic about signings, well, I'm feeling pretty okay about it. We all wanted big numbers in before the trip to Hungary to give the bulk of the squad the opportunity to bed in and bond and we got that. On paper, we've brought some exciting players into the club, many of whom already have plenty of experience of the professional game and matches under their belts. We are only desperately short up front and it's clear that getting strikers of a high enough standard to score in the Championship is always going to be a huge difficulty given our budget - and we're not the only club in that boat. There's still a a long way to go until the season starts, never mind the end of the window. Patience will be worth it if we can get the right man instead of jumping at the first one who we can get in the door. Pre-internet, I'm sure people wouldn't have got their knickers in such a twist and would have been delighted to pick up the Chron to read about 3 new signings each Friday! Yes it is demoralising to see players leave so frequently and the team changing, but unfortunately that is the way of the game. Blame the Sky money, blame agents, blame the ridiculous multi-million pound neon circus it's become, not the Barnsley board, not the Cryne family and certainly not Hecky. Wouldn't we much rather enjoy watching quality players who do well for us and then lose them than watch lads who either have no drive or not enough ability who nobody else wants, as was the case five years ago? Most of all, I love going to Oakwell, sharing time with loved ones and having a good laugh whatever goes on on the field. For all the ******** around finances, going to the ground to watch a cracking standard of football with a packed away end and fantastic home support is what it's all about. On top of everything, you know every staff member at the club gives a **** about us fans and will not be allowed to give anything but their all in gratitude of our support. I don't think you can ask much more than that.
Nice post, but no doubt someone will be along to tell you you're wrong Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
