Lazy idea from inept politicians. If you think that kind of violence was restricted to football then I'm afraid you may want to live in a Disney film

Because you seem to be desperate to defend hooligans and deflect any blame away from them. I wonder why

I get guilty about some things too and try to shift the blame, it's ok it happens.

The fences were introduced to combat hooliganism - this is true! Luckily we didn't introduce them in the home end

Fact remains that fences were at majority of grounds but that didn't result in a loss of life - the cause that day was very poor organisation and decision making on the part of the police. The inquiry was very clear on this matter and is the reason why police will stand trial

Of course it was due to poor organisation and decision making nobody has argued against that. But it was poor decision making in view of the fences existing which was the major problem. Without the fences the fans would have spilled onto the pitch when too many entered.

And the reason for the fences as you rightly said was hooligans. So while the police were ultimately responsible in a big way there is still blood on the hands of each and every person who took part in football hooliganism prior to the fences being erected as their hooligan behaviour was the primary cause of the fences existing.

On a related Hillsborough note. One part of me feels extremely sorry for the police in charge that day (keep reading) as they made those decisions in good faith and did not realise the implications of what they did. We can all make extremely bad decisions with the right intentions can't we? The difference is that when I do it at work it isn't going to kill anyone.
If they had come out the next day and said look I am extremely sorry. It was getting towards kick off and I was worried that there was going to be a crush outside so I ordered the gate to be opened. I didn't realise that everyone would go to that pen and it took me a long time to realise that fans were getting crushed inside. I took the decision to open the gate because there weren't on many people outside and I was worried. I have to live with this forever and I'm sorry. If that had been said then it in my opinion there would have been no court case and no charges now.

But it wasn't was it. What is disgusting is refusing to accept any responsibility and to lie about people's behaviour and try to shift the blame, to try to change statements etc. For that there is no forgiveness and any feelings of sympathy I mentioned earlier go completely out of the window because we all make mistakes but how you deal with it afterwards is what makes you a man or a coward.

Not sure why I felt like posting that but there we go.

Every football fan was viewed as a hooligan- do we as fans take our share of the blame?

I still feel it was the wrong decision to introduce fencing - didn't really stop hooliganism - just moved it.

Why would you as an innocent fan take the blame for what somebody else did? I would argue that you are a victim of their behaviour.

In honesty I am unsure about fencing.
On the one hand it has safety implications but then some sports are watched from behind perspex or inside a building.
On one hand it just means more hooligan behaviour takes place in the stands but on the other hand it stopped pitch invasions.

At the end of the day whether they were the correct answer or not (on balance I think they were not but I do not know what the solution was) the simple fact is that they were there because of hooligans hence my view.

The solutions were implemented post Hillsborough .
A proper police and judicial response to the perpetrators by taking it seriously and dishing out meaningful sentences and investigations. Implementingb banning orders, etc.

Because every fan was viewed as a hooligan or potential hooligan

Has Tyrone hacked Marlon's account? The point SuperTyke is making is obvious and he is correct.

Whether fencing was the correct solution or not is a separate argument- they were put up as a response to hooliganism. We went from changing ends at half time in the 1950s to being caged in in the 1970s. Due to the behaviour of a sizeable minority of supporters.

Read the thread Conan before you comment .
It was obvious he was saying the fans caused the decision for the fences and must take responsibility which is just not the case.

I agree with him. As I have illustrated above.
