Hi all, new member here.. signed up after reading all your comments for years and thinking god I wish I could reply to these.. genius thought occurred to me: get an account!

And here we are.. on with the show.

I find it a bit odd that John Terry waltzes into the Villa side, scoops up a wad of cash, and takes the captaincy straight away without ever kicking a ball for them let alone knowing his teammates.

Slap in the face for the villain players. Especially since they have the prettiest bestest former captain of all time there, miss u Conor.

    Thoughts?

could go 2 ways - they either respect him for his achievements or they revolt and it unsettles them and fragments the players into those that like him and those that hate him.

You must be off your trolley coming on here for enlightening discussion.
Rule number one... if a thread begins with a certain subject, e.g. who is your favourite player, you can guarantee that by post number ten you'll be accused of being either a racist or being told to watch Sheffield Wednesday because you have two heads, or summat like.
Rule number two... you must like puppies.

Welcome RED. Look forward to sharing views. With regards to John Terry, he's now 36 years old
and when he was at Chelsea benefitted from having truly World class players around him.

He will find it much harder in the Championship and it's significant that he's only been given a
12 month contract. Bruce is gambling that he's putting together a side good enough to go up at
the first time of asking. I see that Terry's captaincy didn't get off to the best of starts as they lost
    2-1 at Shrewsbury in a pre-season friendly.

I was reading that the main reason Terry chose Villa is because he has been offered a Coaching role
when he finally quits playing. For his part he's already said that his ultimate ambition is to one day return
to Stamford Bridge as a future Chelsea manager.
With all the money being invested in him I bet Villa Chair Tony Xia is chuffed with those sentiments.!

I might be alone in these thoughts but I think Terry is an excellent signing for them.

He was never massively quick and his experience and knowledge is second to none. I think in the championship against less technically gifted players he'll be fine. His brain is a counter to a yard of pace.

And if you have john terry in your team then he's captaining whether he has the armband on or not. He's not going to be quiet.

I'm not a fan of his past behaviour, but as a footballer and leader I think he has something to offer.

In fact, at a lower level in terms of stature and salary of course, I think our squad could do with someone like him to offer experience and calming influence to help all the young kids.

I know it doesn't sit with the plan and method - something I'm actually behind, I know some on here don't believe in it - but speculating a few quid on an old wise head and experience could add value quicker to some of these younger players if they learn from them, whilst making us a bit more streetwise on the pitch.

He has a season to get them promoted. I'd say he's a good signing but there's a hint of desperation here given that Villa were a Premier League side for years and years but seem to have no experience left just a year after relegation.

I dont really care what happens at Villa - they have silly money to spend as a result of failure in the Prem and if they dont go up this season it is a massive failure, but answering your question.

I dont like John Terry as a person and his off the field activities make him the sort of player I wouldn't want us to sign, but if we had signed him I would expect him to be captain - he has years of experience and is a born leader on the field. I expect him to be one of their key players next season. He just better keep his paws of Hourihanes lass thats all

With respect Troff, Villa are hardly speculating " a few quid". With wages and a bonus if they go up he'll get the
thick end of £4 million.! That's nearly £87 grand every time he pulls a shirt on if he plays every
    game that is.

I personally don't think he will because I believe with his lack of pace and his age he'll be holding back
some of the unknown speed merchants he comes up against in the Championship and could well get suspensions
or a sending off or two. ! The legendary Jan Molby was only 32 when we took him on loan from Liverpool and as good as he'd been for 12 seasons with them he really struggled. It will be very interesting to see how at 36 with his legs probably going Terry performs.!

I wasn't suggesting we do anything similar in terms of outlay or even remotely close - just that an older experienced player, even if it was just one, would benefit the team and the squad and even assist in the business plan of adding value to the younger ones by imparting knowledge and adding a bit of nous to the raw talent. Probably a centre back or central midfield player. It doesn't fit into the plan so it won't happen - I just think it would be of use

Essien and Ballack didn't fare too well against Bobby Hassell in midfield either...

I'm not too sure any player ought to be judged on their performance in one game. If so Terry, Essien and Ballack were terrible footballers, whilst Kayode Odejayi was one of the all time great big men up front, Dennis Souza perhaps Brazil's finest centre half and Rob Kozluk heroic and the best left back in the country!

No I think his great performances are likely to well outnumber ones like those, much as I remember it very fondly.
