Uk plans age verification for porn websites http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40628909 I'm genuinely curious about how this can work - don't get me wrong I have no problem with the idea if it can be done in a way that doesn't cripple web access for everyone but I just don't see any way it can actually be done. Are all the ISP's going to have to start blocking access to all websites worldwide that the government decrees unsuitable, and if they do do they then also have to start blocking access to VPN's. Or is this just one of those publicity seeking ideas where they will implement something that doesn't actually solve a problem just creates the impression of doing something. A bit like the policy they brought in a few years ago of "banning" extreme porn -when all it actually meant was it banned certain types of porn from being produced or sold by UK based companies - the only ones they could directly control.
Didn't they already make it so that you had to phone your internet provider and specifically ask for certain types of sites to be made viewable anyway?
Its a crock of ***** law that promises so much yet will deliver **** all. Prepaid master card from smiths and a little dwarf porn on its way.
Actually no - I am more concerned about the effects of this - either it will be a completely useless policy that is so easy to circumvent its a waste of time, or there is a real danger of the government forcing ISP's to block access to all sorts of websites with no need for court orders, In any case for the policy to be effective this would include all VPN's which dont agree to the government restrictions I just don't know how the government can achieve what it claims it is trying to do thats all.
Yes though not necessarily phone - you are automatically opted into parental controls unless you specifically ask to be opted out. Presumably that isnt working though or there would be no need for the new improved policy
Completely pointless policy. There is absolutely no way to block a VPN. I have home-made VPNs set up in the USA, France and Canada. just servers that I pay £4 a month for in a data center. Unlimited bandwidth. Everything gets passed through if I want it to, even DNS traffic. Good luck stopping that.
You don't even need a VPN though (currently). If you have these blocks on, just check which DNS you're using. I suspect the same will be the same afterwards.
