    'Ello.

Following this topic from a few days ago, I thought it nice to join in as well. Wife of 'Runner', and also quite active (some'd say too active....) on social media/forums, so why not join the forum? And I was asked by Gally to do an intro, so here we go.

In short: Dutch, moved to the UK in 2011 for my study stuff, and ended up in Darfield after 2 years in Hull. Although friends say I already sound and act more Barnsley than many. I'll take it as a compliment.

As mentioned in that thread, I had never seen a live football game in my life before I moved to Darfield. I followed the Dutch national team whenever they were playing, but that was when they weren't *****. Nowadays.... don't get me started. At least the Dutch ladies won the European Championship...

Anyway, I had never been to a game before, but I was sold from that first Barnsley game back in January 2015, I think it was. OK, it was getting used to watching the game without the commentary and having to sort out things like names myself, but strangely enough that was easier to do than expected, especially if you start getting into it, reading the news and following team updates, so you know who is who, etc.

In the end, and it has to be said, before the bandwagon really took off (=before they got promoted) we decided to just go all-in and buy a season ticket. And I just love the home games, a pint before the match, sometimes one after. Atmosphere is great most of the time,

Other things I like: trail running, sports in general, beer (drinking and brewing), whisky, sci-fi (reading and television), coffee, travelling in our camper van, F1 and MotoGP and their feeder series, browsing the interwebs/social media/forums, board games... well I can go on and on. Any questions, ask.

Ta! And I'm kind of used to that, being a frequent twitter user, and posting for 17 years (and moderating for 7) on one of the Netherlands' most notorious forums ;)

Welcome to the social media version of Xanadu!:D
The more new posters the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Damn! I've been sussed out again!:D
For all it's faults, though, this s a great forum with some outstanding posters. I believe the main strength is the variety of views expressed on a vast number of subjects, but especially on all matters relating to Barnsley Football Club.
My family & I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people from here, some of whom have become close friends. I hope you're as fortunate as we have been.

If your post count is anything to go by, I'd say that might indeed be true!

And yes, I hope so too! Ta!

Welcome to you as well - Runner is lucky to have a football loving wife. Mine hates football - only took her to one game when we were first going out and she still wanted to impress me Barnsley won 4-0 against Grimsby town - A new years day game a long long time ago. It was the first time she had stayed at my parents so came with me and Dad to the game, and still she couldn't get interested.
Glad to have you both on board

That's what I like about football, I guess (and running as well), just all sorts of people coming together because they have at least one thing in common. Some hobbies/sports are quite 'segregated', but there are some that really lure in people from all over society.

I'll never cease to be amazed and deeply impressed at how you guys (along with the Finns, Swedes, Danes and Norwegians) manage to pick up English so quickly, and speak / write it completely idiomatically, making you pretty much indistinguishable from a native. I've lived in Russia for twelve years, and while I speak and write pretty much without mistakes these days, there are still plenty of giveaways that it's my second language. Dutch people even seem to pick up the local British accent in no time, it's absolutely remarkable.

If you read my English it's fine. But if you hear me you'll most definitely hear an accent. Pronounciation is my big giveaway.

Moblo's got it nailed though. But she actually studied for that.

To be completely honest, I'm cheating just at tiny bit as I've got a degree in English.... ;)

But part of it is also that we don't dub (or at least when I grew up, we didn't used to dub, think it's a bit more now) a lot of television programmes, working mostly with subtitles. That, and being taught English in primary school from the age of about 10 helps a lot. And, nobody outside the Netherlands (ok, apart from Surinam) speaks our language, so we kind of have to make an effort if we want to be able to do more than order a pint when abroad ;)
