After you stated that you were dying for a cup of tea, did you go on and use it as a premise for blaming Tetleys for your imminent demise?

    I suspect not.

Whereas our esteemed man of fish, in stating there was no chance of promotion, used it as his obviously non factual basis for slagging off LJ.

    Context is of course crucial.

I suppose if I were now to state that this season we had no chance of promotion, and to thus criticise Hecky, you'd be happy to accept we had no such chance of going up, and simply discuss my criticism of Hecky.

Fair enough. I'll shut up now. Am off to bum Taylor Swift

So we're thanking Cryne for not doing much by pulling a train on Taylor Swift whilst drinking tea and deliberately not getting promoted ?

I wouldn't if we named a stand after Wilson that would be embarrassing. May as Well name it after winnall.

My favourite line from this thread is the players and the manager are the ones that matter not the bloke putting the money in..... erm if Patrick hadn't put his own money in to bring in mawson conor and winnall and implemented the transfer policy that brought in Williams, Roberts, watkins ect the jpt and play off would more than likely not of happened. If we would have carried on signing has been/never beens. At the time when we were close to the end they were plenty other wealthy reds fans who never came forward Patrick put his money where his mouth is a true red and one of our own. Hope something is done for him when the time comes because it would be fully deserved.

Don't worry I wouldn't I could think of plenty of people who would come before Wilson in a permanent tribute at oakwell. And Patrick would be one of them. Plenty of teams have named stands after owners Blackburn for one who are now seeing the benefit of foreign ownership.

If you were to name Oakwell After an owner you would probably choose the one who built it John Dennis rather than the one who let it run to seed.

You miss the essential point of Jay's post but hey ho.

Not really it's just my opinion you would name it after a green grocer? How much of his own cash did he put in? I just think too many on here are abit disrespectful towards Patrick and I find jays post just that... People may miss him one day but hey ho

I have lived in Barnsley for the whole of my 66 years, but there are still some things about my town and its people that I do not understand. One of those things, and I have come across it regularly over the years, is the reluctance to thank someone who has done you a favour. It does not take anything away from the person who is doing the thanking, and it acknowledges that the person being thanked did not have to do what he did. The individual being thanked did something that he did not have to do, often with no thought of any potential reward or acknowledgement. He did it because he wanted to. And the fact that he wanted to do it, is seen as a justification for not expressing thanks by third party who has also benefited. There is no need to thank him, or at least that is the theory.

I am sure that when Patrick Cryne saved the club, he did not do so because he thought that the supporters of Barnsley Football Club would think any better of him for his selfless act, but he did it anyway. Later, when the club needed further tranches of investment, I guess that he must have thought long and hard about the subsequent investments. It would undoubtedly have been pointed out that he had wasted his initial investment and that the club would never be able to repay him, and that he was throwing good money after bad. And yet, he continued to fund the club through the difficult years. When even so called loyal fans turn their backs on it in the face of poor results, Mr Cryne never lost faith. He never turned his back on the club. He was always there when the club needed him.

So now he is engaged in the process of finding a new owner. Someone else who can be trusted to look after the club, invest sensibly for the community and not walk away when the going gets tough. It is a very difficult task, and one which should not be rushed. But what of his period in charge. Well the English game has been taken over by people who know practically nothing of the game, its traditions and its history. They have become involved because they see the money being invested by SKY and they think that there is money to be made out of it. Are these the right people to be in charge of the game that we love? I doubt it, but it seems we have no choice. What Patrick Cryne is trying to do is guarantee a future that sadly does not include him. And yet, he is partaking in that process with all the diligence of the good owner that he undoubtedly has been.

So he saved the club, he repeatedly invested in its future when few would have done so, and he is engaged in the process of finding a trustworthy new owner even though he is unlikely to see much of the club's future. If you ask me, every fan should recognise his sacrifices, and even though none of us asked him to make those sacrifices, we should be prepared to thank him. I certainly do. And yet, this thread is full of contributions from those looking for an excuse not to do so. As I said at the start, Barnsley is a very strange town that is full of very strange people.

I haven't seen a single post saying that Patrick should not be thanked. Big difference between that and saying he shouldn't have a stand named after him.

If you did me a good deed I would thank you, it doesn't mean I would name my house red rain towers

Don't think he put any of his own in.

His father did though. Quite a bit at the time from those days.

But he didn't need to put any in. He manage to build what we have today and get us to the premiership by managing the resources that he had.

Bloody good record he had too.

The admin and itv digital fiasco aside JD should also be down in history and is just as fanatical about the club as anyone else.

For a bit of balance like

How much of the modern Oakwell has Mr Cryne constructed. What stands have been built during his tenure? What tangible improvements to the training pitches have been made? When were the floodlights last replaced. Every time you sit in Oakwell you should thank the 'green grocer' as you call him cos without him you'd be sitting on a pile of mud.

Mr Cryne has of course done many positive things and if he chooses to take some of that money back who would blame him.

As I said you miss/are unable to comprehend Jay's post.

But curmudgeonliness is our birthright as Yorkshire folk, isn't it? I loved this story Mike Brearley told about his father and grandfather in an interview with Mike Atherton at the weekend:

“My dad was a schoolteacher. He was the first in our family to stay on after school or even go into sixth form. Most of the others were bringing money home by then. His father was an engine fitter from Yorkshire. Obviously a very skilled man. He played for Heckmondwike cricket club. If my father [Horace Brearley played a few first-class matches for Yorkshire and Middlesex] ever got runs, they would say to him, ‘Tha’ wouldn’t have got hundred if tha’ father’d been bowling!’ Very Yorkshire.”

You just made a word up (curmudgeonliness). It weren't like that in my day. We had to use words made up by other folk.

It is according to my spell checker, which I have set for Yorkshireisms. It doesn't like that one either.
