Who's to say he isn't just doing this to try and secure himself a better contract and salary with us? Tactical way to get a pay rise.
I agree, but I dobut we are able to hand out new deals at this point. Mr Lee needs to make it known there is a 3 year deal in the pipeline.
blimey, that approach hasn't worked too well in the recent past. Extending contracts is not one of BFC's strong points. Hint at wanting to stay and wham bang..... next day you're gone !
I’d be incredibly surprised if the powers that be give any manager, PH or otherwise, a three year deal. As a club we’ve haemorrhaged so much money paying off managers and their coaching staff when they’ve been deemed unfit for purpose whilst under lucrative contracts. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying for one second that PH or his coaching staff are unfit for purpose but we’ve been here before (or certainly I have), where a manager is riding on the crest of a wave and has the backing off the fans only to see that support dwindle to the point where his position is untenable, take Keith Hill, David Flitcroft and Danny Wilson for example.
Me neither. Huge club, huge contract and if it all goes south then the severance package will provide financial security for himself and his family for years to come.
I can't see him turning the job down if he's offered it. Money trumps everything else at the end of the day. If it all goes tits up, he'll still be far better off than staying at Barnsley.
I think even if it went wrong his reputation would still be good, most people think Sunderland are doomed anyway, so its not really a gamble, I'd still be wanting enough money that I don't need to go back to coaching the stiffs if it does go South and I couldn't get another head coaching role in the championship.
We should use some of that money we have stuffed under the mattress to match their offer and persuade him to stay. Might stick a tenner on next manager being Devaney or Hassell.
Its a no brainer.... huge pay rise for him, then a huge pay off after 6 weeks and he's back in time for the transfer window!
Johnson would have undoubtedly have done had it not been for his long contract length. Let's be fair, even though Hecky is fantastic etc. there was of course a possibility that this season, or indeed last, we could have really struggled and found ourselves bottom at this time. If there were no sign of improvements, fans would be calling for his head eventually, and on a 3 year deal it's difficult to sack a manager with our budget
