Remember the official site article when LJ left which made out it's the system in place and the coach position is just a cog. Let's hope they are right. Would expect same as before with a former player promoted to head coach and maybe another ex player brought in to coach within the system for future years.

If we're paying our head coach under £100K a year then we're always going to lose them to the first championship club who comes knocking.

Isn’t it commonplace for managers to be paid less, rightly or wrongly, than the vast majority of the players? I really can’t see PH being on anywhere near as much as our top earner or the sort of money that people said Hourihane and Winnall were on.

Time for the club to show how much he's valued then. He should be on £500 k a year without doubt if we've any desire to keep hold of him. Hecky is the reason we attract the promising young players that we do. He's the key to 'the plan' for me....

Sorry it was meant as a question to the football club.

Wasn't Flicker on £200k+ , I'd doubt after promotion Hecky would be on less.

If that’s true it’s ridiculous, most of the League two managers will be on that, a lot of league one more.

He’s mid table in the championship with a net spend of the square root of **** all and on 2k a week?

It might be a lot more than a lot of our fans earn, but it’s chickenfeed for a manager at this level. Some managers in this division will probably earn about that in a month.

Mel Machin was on £100k here nearly 30 years ago according to John Dennis, surely we pay better than that!

If the club can buy players worth 750k (who might not end up good enough) they can afford to pay a manager the same or more, especially given his record. Of he wants to go because "It's a challenge he can't turn down" , then fair enough, but £750k shouldn't be an issue imo.

I have no idea if Sunderland will make an approach or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if any club did. For me, Hecky is by far our most valuable asset. We have a group of players who are good lads, honest professionals who work hard every week, who give their all. But in terms of experience and skill they're limited. Yet we're beating teams, quite regularly, that have much, much better players. We're far better than the sum of our parts.

In my opinion we're doing that because we have an exceptional head coach. We're well organised, well drilled and we make the absolute best of what we've got. I underestimated just how good Paul is because I thought we were nailed on for a relegation scrap yet at the moment we're not in one. And I put that down to Paul's superb managerial and coaching abilities.

Barnsley fans with a bit of sense know it's not all about results. Our squad was ripped apart, we've sold for big money and bought on the cheap. Those that have left have signed for bigger more prestigious club where they'll earn a lot more money. Those we've signed are from smaller clubs further down the footballing pyramid. Yet we're still competing. There's people within football who have sense too, people who look beyond our results and see a team guided by a very, very good manager.

That doesn't mean Hecky will go, I have no idea what his ambitions are, but I think we'll have to get used to other clubs taking an interest in him.

If Patrick Cryne was well and keeping the club then Paul would at least feel secure because I can't imagine Patrick sacking him. He seems to believe in him 100% or as much as you can believe in someone. Unfortunately Patrick is not well and understandably he wants to find a buyer. I don't know how secure a manager can feel when the ownership of the club is so uncertain.

I've heard Dave Bassett talk a couple of times about how he was offered another job while at Barnsley. I think this was in the summer after the play-offs. John Dennis convinced him to stay. Not long after we sacked him but the other job had obviously gone. Security in football management is almost non existent. I would never question Paul's feelings for Barnsley or his loyalty to the club, but there's more to life than that.

Agreed but the problem is the takeover - who would sanction the improved contract offer - it would need both buyer and seller to agree at very least - tricky situation - loads variables to this

I have no idea what Paul Heckingbottom's salary is and would imagine the vast majority claiming to be in the know are just clutching numbers from thin air.
