This is a long shot, but I've been contacted by a cricket club in Germany (yes, honest!) who want to visit Barnsley on May 5th/6th next year and play a couple of friendly games. We're playing them on Sunday May 6th, but it will be almost impossible to find opposition for Saturday May 5th as all "proper" teams will be involved in league matches. This means we'll have to try to put a team together from guests, retired players (the Germans aren't very good!), occasional players, fringe players etc. It occurred to me that there may be one or two of those on here, hence this post. They want to book flights next week so if anyone is interested in taking part please post on here so I can gauge interest. Out of interest, you may wonder how they chose Barnsley. Well, they didn't do the obvious and google "village cricket" or whatever - they googled "beer festival"! They then found Elsearch beer festival, and from there Stainborough CC. Should be a good Bank Holiday weekend My club here: www.stainboroughcc.co.uk German club here: http://www.heligolandpilgrimscc.de/cms/
I haven’t played in a fair while due to back issues. I was ok before though so if you need a body let me know.
Can't bat, cant bowl and have never kept wicket. I can amble about the field, I can catch (occasionally) and my throwing arm isn't bad. Am I in? Oh and despite not drinking the stuff, I'm told I make a great cup of tea.....
I played some years back. Was an ok bowler. Not really tried in the last 10 year or so but I could give it a go lol. I know a few of the lads I know plays regularly
Used to bowl a bit. Part time batsman. Can keep wicket. Fielding legend. Can sledge with the best. War? What war?
I can bowl out and in, leg and off. Well i could 20 years ago But alas i will be on the razz all day with it being bank holiday sunday.
I played for forty odd years but my eyes have gone now, minds you with poor eyesight , I could take up umpiring !
Same here mate retired 6 years ago with bad knee from balling on it for 40 years now eyes n waistband gone but would gladly help you out if short. Played against stainboro a few times who was the guy who used to pull his trousers up whilst facing as baller ran in then slogged it into pub car park and the batter who used sniff his bat after facing a ball, about 20 years ago.
What about ex-red Luke Potter? I know he is at the Rec but he used to dabble in cricket. Maybe he could do something.
Luke plays for us (Stainborough) anyway so he'll probably be playing against them in the Sunday game.
Excellent! Judging by the replies so far it should be a goer. Plenty of time between now and then to sort it out.
Not sure but I think the bloke pulling his trousers up could be Dean Whitfield. I know the bat sniffer though - Richard Umbers. We eventually cured him of the habit by rubbing chilli powder into his bat handle before a game. The poor bloke had to retire hurt
Update: The German cricket team have now confirmed their visit and have booked flights and accommodation. They're arriving on Friday 4th May, leaving on Monday 7th. The select XI I'm trying to put together will play them on Saturday May 5th, so those of you who are interested please bookmark this date. There's just a small matter of finding a ground as our ground will be in use for a league match, so if anyone has a large garden please let me know. Should be a good day if the weather sticks to the plan. Cheers all.
