Because far too many people decide that living off the dole is their career.

I very much doubt that, the majority of the welfare bill is pensions & tax credits for people actually working. The problem here is low wages v cost of living.

I had a very short spell on JSA years ago, very short. Despite working practically all my life, I was made to feel ashamed to be there. I got one payment before I started my next job, and I can’t imagine having to go through that nonsense every week or whatever.

And yes, there are folk making a career of it. God knows why. But the vast majority don’t need punishing for that.

And there’s more unclaimed benefits than the total spent giving them out.

The film ‘I Daniel Blake’ highlights how ****** that system is and those suffering get my sympathy.

Or the strain on the police services goes up by probably billions to deal with the thieves around having to steal to get by. More courts to take those people to court and build more prisons to house the thieves.

If you have the get up and go, you make your own life. I left the North (realising I didn't want a manual job, like going down the pit etc.) I'd made money at school by buying and re-selling Triangl and Hornby train sets, having a paper round etc. In 1960 I reached the big city of London, found a bed sitter at £5 a week, and went to an agency on Kensington High Street and got a job immediately. Three years later I had reached management level and was entrusted with being sent to Abadan in Iran as Acting Manager for three weeks whilst the company found a permanent manager. This however lasted 5 months, and on my return I was sent to South Vietnam on a salary of £3,000 a year as level relief. On my return I was made Manager of the company's operations in Port Harcourt, and I was on my way.

Since that date I have worked for BP, Occidental Oil and ConocoPhillips, before in my last years working for a Yorkshire Building Contractot for a salary somewhat smaller that my last in the oil industry.

The reason for this diatribe, is purely to illustrate, what you can do if you get of your butt, your familiar surroundings and make a bit of a sacrifice (missing friends family etc?) you can achieve much much more than hoping a great job will fall in your lap at home.

i think the benefits system works great. I had my incap ben stopped ( need a new knee and got 3 fractured verts in my lower back and a heart attack) and was told I was fit to work, so I applied for jobseekers/esa but was told I couldn't have it as I was UNFIT for work as I get a disability pension off the army, everytime I ask about things I just get shunted from 1 to the other

Why do people think you have to leave the area to get a "proper" job? I've never understood it.
