No, I think going to bed is the cut-off so as long as you stay up all month you can just keep going and say you did it.

I believe the dry January (according to bossmans law) officially starts around 4-30 am,

I'm doing this. I've done it before and drank tea at the time in the evening where you start wanting a drink. My mate has advised bottled fizzy water so that you can open something cold and fizzy ( if it's beer you're into) and trick yourself. After the first week it's a lot easier...

New Years doesn’t count though because it’s hard of the Dog, which is always necessary

I started on 30th Dec, as was DJing that night & NYE. Still going strong so far. Drinking a lot of herbal tea on an evening....
Normally only drink when I'm not DJing (about 5 days a week). Done it before & the first week is the worst. Just habit for me, as I work from home I normally finish working at 5pm & then pop down my local for a few before my tea. No wonder I'm a fat *******, which is the main motivation to do it.

Necessary? Not sure about that, but it's definitely illegal.

I too started at 1.30am on NY Day! Doesn't count until you've gone to bed IMHO.
