If you're a Barnsley fan you're a tyke. If you have made your home in Barnsley you are too. It's not where you were born it's where a piece of your heart lies
A Barnsley fan is a Barnsley fan wherever he was born, if he goes to the matches, checks the Barnsley score before any other, lives and breathes Barnsley he/she is a Barnsley fan period
Young lad that sits with us is from Norwich. His dad is a reds fan who moved there, and he followed suit. The more the merrier for me. I'm not from Barnsley either btw.
Errrmm. The Reds - which we are often referred to - can be related to Liverpool FC, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest etc etc etc. But there is only one TYKES. And that's Barnsley. If born in, or have any link to Barnsley - then you are a TYKE. If you adopt the town as your own - then you are a TYKE. Which is a name linked to the WHOLE of Yorkshire. BBC Radio Sheffield and the like will call us anything - but they will try their best not to call us TYKES of YORKSHIRE.
Im a tyke. 37 years. Born in oxford. Moved to tarn when 4. my dad was born and bred in tarn. Still class myself as a yorkshireman
I see "fans" and "supporters" as two different groups. When I meet one of these glory fans who follow the man united or arsenal but never goes to games I regard them as just a fan. I see a supporter as one who who supports the club financially by attending games and putting money into the club wherever they are from.
I only ever see the southern papers call us "the tykes" .... And Yes you don'tev to be from Barnsley or its environs to support the Reds.
