I actually think he will turn us down so he can take Lincoln to Wembley. It's not as though we can hang about and wait on this appointment, so would surely have to move to the next target..
He’s done well at Lincoln, no doubt in my mind, he’s made them into a play off contending team in League 2 from the doldrums of Non league. But, we’ve done this before, Hill, Parkin, et al we’re all the best at what they do in their respective divisions and failed miserably. FFS we shouldn’t need to look at the bottom end of the market. We have a small fortune in the bank from recent player sales and we have multi billionaires as owners. Now is not the time to take a punt on relative unknowns.
Agreed, but here in lies the problem with multi billionaire owners when the modestly sized club they buy isn't pumped full of money and end up successful. The fans will eventually turn on them. In our case, it might be sooner than later if this next crucial appointment doesn't work out.
Im maybe been too critical of him but i just cant see what contacts or knowledge he would have in order to sustain a championship club? Hes been working at league 2/ non league. Seriously underwhelmed. This is barnsley all over
I'm fairly sure it will be Cowley or Grayson. I'd have faith in Grayson keeping us up, but as a longer term project I'm not sure he's the man to deliver the plan. Cowley looks more to fit the mould, but we might end up going backwards to rebuild a team in L1 that can compete & play the type of football we'd like to see.
Thing is we didn't give Parkin or Hill a decent length of time to stamp their mark on the Club. Parkin was with us less than 12 months and administration did for him. Hill had 18 months. Cowley would have the same issues. It's the 'X-factor' culture - too many people want instant success and aren't prepared to be patient.
I'd fear for the guy to be honest, i'm sure it wouldn't be long before his accent was used against him just like with Hill. There's also part of me that wants him to enjoy his Wembley experience. He's earned it, its a great thing to be part of, and he deserves the reward. Just the romantic in me for once hopes the little guy doesn't get crapped on.
We need to either spend a little cash on someone who'll keep us up - Grayson or Saint Mick OR we stick with Harsley and see how he goes. a Punt at another lower league manager? No thanks.
I've know someone who works in the game at league 1,2 and conference level. The Cowley's though they come across well on TV are not liked by many other managers. Yes they've done well up to now in the lower levels but I've been told they have a real attitude problem. An ex tarn legend who is coaching at the minute couldn't believe how unprofessional and cocky they are. Yes it's one thing to be doing well punching above your weight and receiving praise, but when you climb the slippery managerial ladder it does help to have friends. Its nice to see managers with passion but we don't want a Neil Harris type who can't accept fault and makes us look like a bunch of knuckle draggers. Just an opinion, and the person who mentioned this I respect a lot and isn't a WUM or attention seeker
We may have to accept the "success"we want is unlikely to happen. Given our wage structure we can't compete in this league beyond just trying to stay in it. Yes the head coach role is important but it's the standard of player that makes or breaks it for me. Time will tell what our ambitions are.
They’re only a lower league manager because they haven’t yet had an opportunity elsewhere, obviously. That doesn’t make them any worse than someone who’s currently managing at this level. Chris Wilder was a lower league manager who was doing well and now he’s also doing superbly well in the Championship. For every example of a well known Championship or Premier League manager that has done well there are corresponding cases where they’ve failed miserably.
I hate the high profile because they’ve been on tv nonsense. It bugs me after world cups when you see bang average players have a good 45 mins then are suddenly worth 25 million to then rot in Newcastle’s reserves.
Well sooner than later the billionaire board are sure to see you can't get to the premier league spending next to nowt. If that's what they ultimately want then they will have to go above and beyond our recent spending/wage constraints
With all due respect Wilder took over a vastly underperforming club, that’s budget was double that of any other club in the division. Also he was a Sheffield lad which helped to bring the fans back onside. It’s not comparable to Cowley coming to us.
The situation calls for instant results, Cowley may well be a better proposition over the long term but I suspect he has mistakes to make and learn from, someone like Grayson has been there done that, as has Mick. I think therefore, if we go for and get Cowley we are more likely to be in League One come the end of the season then if we get Grayson.
Do you think we as a club are patient enough for those mistakes though. Heckingbottom (inexperienced, learning his trade manager) made some fairly big ones that directly cost us points. The knives were out fairly quickly from some quarters.
