Not being able to make a late decision to go to a "high profile" match

Just thinking about this weekend's match. I can't go for work reasons and I have a season ticket, but this post concerns the floating, casual sort of fan who is not allowed to make his mind up on a Saturday afternoon about whether to attend a match.

I wonder if the day will ever come when we can drop this "no ticket sales/no pay on the day nonsense". What a shame that the idea of deciding to go to the match (maybe at 2pm on a Saturday, while having a drink) has disappeared for these high profile matches. I bet there will be loads of people in town late Saturday morning with their mates who have tickets thinking "Hmm, wouldn't mind carrying on the afternoon down at Oakwell. Why not - they might even beat Wednesday for a change. Right, come on, let's get down there!!"

It's a simple, perhaps old fashioned scenario; mates sticking together, making a late decision to go. But no - it's not allowed. Of all the bad things about football in this modern world, that must be one of the worst. Security/crowd safety considerations over-rule everything else. I'm not for one minute saying that safety is not important but surely it would not be beyond the wit of a football club to say "Ok, come to the turnstiles and hand over your cash, but you better have some kind of id with you (preferably showing your address)". I know that proves nothing really but at least it would be something in place to make trouble makers think twice, and it would certainly give the last minute waiverers a chance to change their minds and get down to the match after all.

Not everyone is able to, or even willing, to organise their life in advance. Why should they, and the club, be penalised for that? I suppose there will be around 15-16,000 there on Saturday but that figure could increase to 16 or 17,000 if pay on the day was allowed. I KNOW this might tempt some idiots from Sheffield to get into the home ends but there is a simple answer to that. The first bit of trouble/intimidation/risk of disruption then get them out of their seats and down the steps immediately. What you do with them then is up to the ground security staff. Just leaving them to shout the odds and potentially cause trouble would be just stupid and is easily avoidable.

Too simplistic? Too outrageous to suggest that it's ok for police decisions to interfere in the running of a well-established business? It's bad enough being forced to kick off at 1215, but excluding people without pre-bought tickets is just STUPID.

Thanks. I'm sure plenty will be of the same mind but, equally, I'm sure that we will never see the day when pay on the day is allowed for ANY match. It's too simple an idea but the idiots have spoiled it for everyone (and by that I mean BOTH the trouble makers and the police).

It's not about the danger of people coming and getting in the wrong end, it's about being able to plan for policing on the day. Knowing the number that are required and in what places they need to be stationed.

Plus, say we sell 18,000 tickets as of Friday afternoon and then 4,000 turn up hoping to pay on the gate, where there isn't capacity as half of the West is shut? Thousands of Wednesday fans who are locked out and have made the journey specially in the hope of watching the game, some a little rowdy and pissed up. Not the sort of thing we want to go back to is it?

I once had a very heated debate with Ben Mansford over on the day pricing and different prices. Safe to say he didn't share my view at all.

Seemed unable to comprehend that people might change work patterns or just wake up and decide that they fancied a match.

Everyone should/could print at home was his theory.

I take your point about the risk of a lot of away fans turning up hoping to get in the home ends. The thing is though that they would surely know that they stand little chance of getting in, wearing Wednesday colours (these people being morons, not ordinary human beings), so I think the numbers would be relatively small. The police could then do their job outside the ground because I see very little evidence of them doing a job INSIDE football grounds these days.

Not paying on the day must have cost the club a fortune over the years.

Fair enough, but in my opinion it's allowing for the possibly of major trouble and situations arising that are incredibly difficult to police and compromise safety. Like you say, some folk are morons and don't need much persuasion to become unreasonable and harmful.

I'm usually old school about a lot in football but being strict on all-ticketing for certain games is something I'm okay with. Is is really that much to ask to get people to make a decision 24 hours before when the consequences of things going wrong can be very serious?

Talking about those with only one brain cell between them though. I know plenty don't wear the shirts and scarves any more, but plenty do so.

I think we all know the answer to that question. There are plenty who just will not fall in with the idea of getting a ticket in advance for a match at Oakwell. If it were one at Oakwell South that would be a different kettle of fish of course.

The planning wouldn't be that difficult, it's hardly operation 'overlord' is it? Considering how both teams are faring with the addition of an early kick-off i think some genius police commander would reasonably predict a crowd of perhaps 17-18 thousand if pay on day available (not be many more at those prices).

    Ah right - got it!

I loved Mrs Merton. The question to Debbie McGee about "What was it that attracted you to the multi-millionaire Paul Daniels” is one of the all-time classic comedy moments
