It’s looking less and less like a penalty kick every time I watch it. Do you think if I watch it a few more times the ref will reserve the decision and we’ll end up with three points. I’m assuming he must have given it as some kind of joke?
I’ve let it go as I’d heard the poor bloke has lost so much sleep reliving the decision he’s a nervous wreck
For me watching it over, the original coming together occurred outside the box. As the momentum carried both players nearer to the goal Jaoa must have thought if I attempt a theatrical dive, I might get something. He should have got a yellow for simulation for me. It was never a penalty.
When I saw it I thought it was a penalty, or at least the ref would give it. Watching it again I think he gets impeded but goes down just to win the pen. It's one of those "entitled to go down" ones that some refs would give and others wouldn't. I'm more concerned the pass wasn't read and cut out. We shouldn't be allowing defenders to be taken out with passes like that.
It could have been the gentlest of contact between one of Yids’s toenails and the back of Jao’s boot. Other than that...nothing
And the fact that he went down 5 minutes after the contact. I said at the time it was one of the worst decisions i've seen in professional football.
at least when Hammil went down he was in the same time zone as the defender Yiadom and the dee dar weren't for the penalty
I really dislike the attitude in football that you're entitled to go down even when there isn't enough contact to knock over a six year old child. It has legitimised cheating.
More a point for discussion than a suggestion as obviously it'll never happen but here goes. Are we awarding penalties for the wrong thing? What about using the professional foul criteria instead of position on the pitch? For example, player crossed halfway line, clean through, head down, driving towards goal, defender sprints back and scythes him down - penalty. Why should he just get a free kick miles from goal allowing the defending team to get ten more men behind the ball? Foul in the penalty area where the ball is running wide or where a winger cuts inside and is fouled just inside the box preventing a cross - direct free kick. Now free kicks inside the box can, dependent on position be nigh on impossible to score from, so perhaps the fouled player or his team captain could choose from the site of the offence or the edge of the D, for fouls in the 18 yard box. That way, we could use cards to punish the severity of the foul itself and penalties to punish the cynicism. Furthermore, in both cases in point in Saturday, the attacking player would've been better off trying to stay upright, which in my view would be no bad thing.
I think the punishment for diving in such a way should fit the crime. On this occasion he should have his eyes pecked out by an Andean condor with issues whilst a rumour be started on social media that their lass keeps mucky net curtains.
The whole concept of ‘winning’ a penalty really depresses me. You should be doing your best to stay on your feet - if you’re clattered or brought down against your will, then it’s a pen. But this idea of feeling contact and deliberately going down to win a pen....awful development. Naive and old-fashioned? Yes, probably. Would just like a bit more honesty.
Thing is these decisions should even out over a season but they never do for smaller clubs. We scored a perfectly good winner at Hillsborough that was rubbed off by the ref and now this. That's 2 points for us instead of 6 and 2 for them instead of 0. Wednesday could stay up as a result and we go down. And people wonder why the fa have resisted technology in the game for so long.
