Fiorentina have renewed Davide Astori's contract for life. His salary will go to his wife and daughter.

    Thats absolutely phenomenal from Fiorentina.

    Kudos to them.

    It’s a great gesture.

I presume they’ll just add his wife to payroll instead.

Wonder how much he was on - in terms of the sustainability of it.

He was on €25,000 a week apparently.

    Thanks - so about £22k.

It’s a great gesture - not sure how the club are financially these days, so it’s certainly not a throw-away gesture.

That is a really decent thing to do. Is it for the life of his wife?

I'd assume so, its not very clear on the news bulletins I've read. Whatever it is, its still amazing.

I think based on the quote that he was due to renew his contract the day after he died to 'see out his career' there that that is what they have renewed. The club said that he was supposed have signed it on Thursday but they put it back because of the bad weather. Whilst I imagine they would have felt pretty guilty about not having signed it earlier (although they couldn't have known), I'm certain no-one would have expected them to make the kind gesture they have done.

At last, some humility in football. What a great gesture.

    This is a hoax.

Even Serie A officials fell for it, supposedly.

Just reading the post it wasn’t clear what “contract for life” would mean and especially odd given the circumstances. Wasn’t having a go. Have read that he had just committed himself to end his career at Fiorentina and was about to sign a new contract. Guess that’s what the headline story was referring to.

P.S. Didn’t read other posts saying same thing! Hope it’s not a hoax.

I cant find anything reliable to back this up. What I can find is that he was going to sign a contract extension and that they are going to retire the #13 shirt.
I hope there is some truth in the story and maybe they will give the money he would have earned to his wife but for now I am unfortunately sceptical - hope I am wrong mind.
Even had he signed the contract - surely on death it no longer applies and his mrs gets whatever death benefits are arranged. That wouldnt have changed had he signed the contract

Did seem odd to give a woman 25k a week for the rest of her life which could be 50 years. The next time the club got sold it would have made it harder, as a potential new owner wouldn't want to take such a slice of the annual budget onto that.

Could be £80million or more for her. So unlikely to say the least.
