Another frustrating game for fans and among all the reasons for this several people get blamed. Most of the players are not up to championship standard so you have to make the best of what you have got, this means selecting players who are up for the battle, play to your strengths and select the players the in their best positions. The coach has overseen six matches with only one game won and without McBurnie it would probably have been six straight losses, so the the man who does not like wingers decides to play McBurnie in a wide left position. Last night Farke made a substitution in the second half and switched to 3-5-2 formation. Instead of going for a second goal Morais decided to close shop and play for a 1-0 win against a team with nothing to play for. This left Moore battling against the three defenders on his own and invited Norwich to play in our half. McBurnie and Moore playing together up front would have releived the pressure on the defence and put the game to bed To compound this he then substituted one ineffective wide man with another, while a man with the heart for a battle fails to even make the bench. Hull have drawn clear of relegation by scoring goals, Barnsley have had only one 1-0 win all season yet we still play two defensive midfielders even against mediocre teams. For all the experience of the head coach, assistant head coach and the physical coach little if any of this has shown..
I just think our players aren't good enough and Guardiola would struggle to get them to score more than one a game. The manager can't legislate for some of the missed chances and stupid individual errors our players make and no change of formation/tactics will change that.
Ugh, seem to have lost that. Here's the gist: I suspect (and it's just a suspicion) that Morais doesn't like the squad he's got, and has decided that the best tactic is just to grind out enough points to survive ahead of wholesale changes in the summer. It would explain the defensive substitutions, and the fact that certain players seem to be vacillating between starting and not even making the squad. It's not how I'd do it, but I think it's a decent - if risky - shout. Since he joined we're almost on a point per game, and as it stands that looks like it would keep us up. As I say, though, he's playing the odds. If any of Birmingham, Burton or Sunderland can win a couple of back to back games then it all starts to look a bit shaky. My feeling is that, should that happen, we'd see him change the way he approaches matches a bit. If I'm right and we stay up, he's a tactical genius. If I'm right and we go down, he's been too clever for his own good.
You acknowledge that Farke changes his system and personnel but do you then acknowledge the impact this had on is? It wasn’t a case of “going defensive” it was a case of a better team playing better coupled to a total lack of options on the bench I take the point that Hammill is surely a better option than Isgrove If Thiam had scored the game is as good as won. He missed, not Morais’s fault
Perhaps you're right and he is trying to grind out enough points, but I'm concerned it's more his style and possibly indicative of how he plans to get us to play in general. I honestly believe that it's our attacking play that will keep us up. We aren't an effective defensive side and whilst we aren't free-scoring, we DO now have two potential goalscorers. McBurnie is scoring despite his position in my opinion, whilst Moore is looking decent but with little support. A more attack minded set up, either a 3-5-2 with two up top, or even a more attacking mindset within our current formation, would surely yield a better chance of results? Perhaps Morais doesn't rate the squad, I cant blame him, but I don't particularly rate how he's setting them up either.
What y What you fail to acknowledge is the effect that the Norwich substitution and change of tactics had on the game. Morais just had to do something as it was clear we were getting slaughtered all of a sudden. Unfortunately our players just weren’t good enough. Basic control is a worrying issue. However, we continued to create enough chances to win the match even after their equaliser. Hopefully we can muster enough to hang on in this league.
after he'd been announced, but before he took over, Andy Giddings spoke to a journalist in the country he'd last worked and asked what style of football could Barnsley expect, after a half chuckle he said probably boring and defensive. Was he right? I think so.
In my honest opinion we should be 2nd bottom, on expenditure etc. We are 4th bottom. It won’t get beetr than that, let’s hope it doesn't get worse.
These players, minus McBurnie though admittedly with Barnes on board who I thought was a class act, were good enough to be safely lower mid table and six points above the drop zone at the start of November. They weren't world beaters but they were proving adequate in their first season at this level. What appears to have happened since is that their heads and confidence has collectively gone. Neither Heckingbottom or, so far Morais have been able to address that. Some aren't good enough. Others are but seem to be written off as useless en masse by some.
Imagine Barnes in the team instead of thiam and that’s a goal a game in my eyes. What a difference that would be making. It wasn’t to be though.
The one that still has most assists even though he’s not played for 3 months. Doesn’t matter really, he’s not here
