Can anyone advise on where is good to go out for a few beers with the lads for the day other than Leeds and Barnsley? Ideally on train and not too far within a hour if possible.

Excellent day out! We did the train route for a friends birthday in January.

There's a crafty way around the train tickets too. Can't remember the exact name of the ticket but it's something along the lines of West Yorkshire Family Day Rover?? Covers 2 Adults and 2 Children (no children present when we did the trip) and was roughly £12. I think it was close to £15 day return individually.

Another bit of a bonus is Darton is included on the list of stations that ticket covers. If you can start/end your trip there you'll not need another ticket. We had to pay separate for the Wombwell - Darton part.

Edit: Thinking about it we only went as far as Marsden so not sure if S'bridge is included? Still called at plenty of stops though and worked back to Leeds: Marsden, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, Mirfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Morley

Ale trail a good day but if you are in a large group you need to get your tactics sorted otherwise you could be waiting ages to get served in the pubs . Manchester is definitely worth considering and Derby via Sheffield

York is a cracking day out and not far between pubs in the city centre and if you get to Donny for the train it’s only 19 minutes direct !

Huddersfield is pretty underrated in my opinion. Same cracking pubs like The Grove, Rat and Ratchet (with on site brewery), Magic Rock Tap (again, on site brewery) and you can always hop on another train to the likes of Stalybridge as people have suggested.
