Jesus, they're taking their time with the new library and adjoining retail unit aren't they? Its just peaking above the hoardings.

Another building, going up in Leeds that l pass everyday on my route to work - that started about 2 months after the library is now on its 7th/8th level.

The Alhambra Centre wasn't built that quickly either. All that complex tiling...

Thought that myself, I'm now based over in Huddersfield but still take a keen interest in the town centre redevelopment and also receive a copy of the weekly 'The Glass Works' newsletter. Progress seems very slow, Henry Boot are probably on day rates and Barnsley Council haven't yet realised!

Noticed that too, werent Debenhams supposedly interested at one point before deciding not to proceed? Also are Barnsley Council trying to tie market traders into a minimum 5 year lease at ridiculous rates?

I think the new college on Shambles St has gone thru permission to pull the old units down, permission to build on same site, construction and several terms of teaching while council have been musing about the library and why a library was classed as a priority, who knows?

Yep, 5 years for self employed longstanding traders is ridiculous. A lot are giving up and retiring or trying to find alternative cheaper retail units.

I was going to say the same about the Cundy Cross junction in the other thread. There didn't seem to be any progress with it for ages.

I thought that the last time I was home - seemed to be taking a long time. Apparently they had massive problems with the foundations which took some sorting out

I think the reason for the delay was that they had to change the form of foundation ,from the original plan. It certainly looked as though the solid sub surface they expected wasn't there. I thought I saw them driving deep piles during the Winter,as the foundation base plus the Winter has been colder and wetter than usual. Sometimes in Civil Engineering projects adaptions have to.be made.

Well if I read it right in the Chronicle we have started to overspend on the whole project.Theirs only Barnsley council who could make a ******** of every thing they do.

I thought that was in the first few months judging by their weekly updates? They found an old well and theres an underground river but they still finished the foundations months ago. They've been pouring those concrete posts for an age, maybe that's where Pat Phelan was found?

Henry Boot are known to be poor payers in the construction industry, and this will reflect on the quality of the people they employ.
