We can't just let these scumbags destroy our town though. They are criminals and need dealing with accordingly. Their crimes aren't victimless
I agree that they should be dealt with, just in a completely different manner to you. Both scenarios though don’t fit into the tory austerity agenda. Things will get much worse with the current regime and Brexit though before they get better.
But yet there are swathes of police up and down the countries motorways. Easy arrests though even with the help of smart motorways
Iran has 5000 drug dealers on death row. It hasn't reduce the number of heroin addicts. Pragmatic approach would be to legalise cannabis, taking it out of the hands of dealers, that sell stronger drugs. Use the tax revenue from sales to improve rehab and enforcement of class A drugs.
Which are also essential considering the standard of driving in this country. Scandalous how many mobile phones I see being used daily whilst behind the wheel.
Not living in Barnsley I cant comment on the cuts to the specific NHS Trusts for that area, but what I can say is Nationally more money is being made available for these Trusts to invest in infrastructure for Rehab. The monies available for this is not from the 'normal' NHS funds that the mainstream Media like to quote. Cant dispute the cuts to Police force though.
Be interesting to see considering the size of the black hole in the Barnsley budget. Time will tell whether the spiceheads increase in town or decrease.
People who monitor the Motorways are not Police but Traffic Highways Agency, different outfit and funding.
Indeed, trouble is everyone wants to see an instant result these days. For me the answer is a mixture of Police, Rehab and Education but the last two take time to see the benefits but are clearly better options in the long term.
I was speaking to a police officer in the chippy the other week. She said to me that there were only 2 car units with 3 police officers for the entire of the Barnsley area. It was Friday evening. She also said that they have to be careful when responding to crimes, as often minor crimes are reported so that criminals can commit crimes without risk at the opposite end of the borough. Whether it’s austerity or not, you can’t deny the cuts in numbers of police...
Erm yes you can. Alcohol, opiate based medication to name two routes. We need an evidence based approach to substances. Our misuse of drug act is archaic. I encourage people on here to read a book by Proffesor David Nutt called; drugs without the hot air, It is extremely insightful. It explores a number of decisions where government has ignored evidence provided by an agency they set up. Many top rank scientists and experts have been sacked or left because of it. People's basis for decisions comes from hysteria cuased in the media from mistruths. For example when mephadrone/mkat (the first 'legal high') got banned 2/3 deaths got reported in a rather sensational way and a bill pushed through quickly to ban it, yet they were reported on before the coroners report and the deaths turned out to be nothing to do wit mephadrone! One was actually altogeter different substance, a heroine substitute medication methadone! Further tothat there has been no evidence to suggest mephadrone was deadly and banning it increased the risk to those using it as more people went back to using riskier drugs such as cocaine which had declined due to the increase in mkat. In summary we neeed to be extremely careful and question the information we recieve and ask why government etc arent listening to the experts in the fields they employ to shape policies.
Meanwhile in Hull, they're having a crackdown... https://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/new...ews/police-reveal-huge-number-arrests-1667623
Plenty of drug addicts start on prescription medication - have a bad back, doctor prescribes some strong painkillers and before you know it, you are a drug addict.
I hardly ever see a marked police car on the motorway - where are you seeing them? Article on Look North this morning - they've arrested 50 drug users from Hull town centre and banned another 70 from entering the town centre - I'm not convinced its getting to the root of the issue, its just moving it somewhere else, and as others have said, putting people in prison is very, very expensive.
We also need to question our whole assumption on drug addiction - there really is a lot of evidence that its situation based and not physical - the US Government were really worried as the Vietnam war came to an end that because of the heavy drug use in Vietnam by GIs that they would be dealing with hundreds of thousands of new drug addicts on their return - this never materialised - it turns out the vast majority, once out of that situation simply stopped taking drugs. How many thousands of people every day take medical Heroin in hospital before/during/after operations? Once they leave hospital how come they're not addicted? Experiments have proven that if you give rats a comfortable habitat and access to drugs they ignore them, put them in overcrowded crappy cages and they opt for the drugs. Makes you think.
M1, every single day I’m on my way home from work plus a roads a64 and a1. The good thing about my kids witnessing these pieces of **** around the town centre is that it’s a clear example of what not to turn out like A very simple solution to this would be to put stocks up in peel square with a detailed description of their crime. You could then wander round at your leisure with a glass of prosecco and read the description of the shamed individuals and act accordingly. If someone had fallen on bad times and it resulted in non payment of council tax you could feel a bit of sympathy and maybe share your drink with them. If they’d been done for online grooming you could feel free to break your glass and saw through their throat with it. Therefor creating an apprehension of consequence that no longer exists within society. Just a suggestion
Barnsley received a 51% (iirc) budget cut to treatment services, from 6m to 3m, i believe the biggest in uk but could be wrong. I wrnt from a team of 13 to 4 in the part u work which was in effect a day service similiar to a community rehab. The thing is forced treatment doesn't work either, for me its a social community thing and the state of our nation at minute its not going to improve. The only real way out i can see is a overhaul of the laws, using the evidence base around harms and taxing the market. Taking the profits away from drug dealers etc. People do drugs and will do drugs whether they are legal or not or regardless of risk (see smokers)
