There maybe a couple but it’s a long shot . Think last WC is was James pronounced (yam ess) of Mexico and the little Chilean player for Man Utd forget his name lol.
I watched the 1990 documentary the other day. The first tournament I remember clearly, and what memories indeed. A very hot summer, going into school absolutely buzzing after the wins, but I also remember how completely devastated I felt after the semi final. Oh well, it was good training for a lifetime of penalty shoot-out calamity as an England fan.
Do you mean James Rodriguez (who is referred to normally just as James) who played for Colombia and scored that belter? And im guessing you mean little pea/ el chicharito (Javier Hernandez)
Yes that’s right it was Columbia I think his native tongue pronounces Yam ess but could be wrong The Chilean I was referring to wasnt Chicharito it was Sanchez think he was playing in Spain before last World Cup but wasn’t a name familiar In uk well not to me anyway lol
The first world cup that I remember is the '78 tournament - my namesake making the headlines and all the ticker tape. The best world cup for me was the '82 tournament - England being unbeaten and the brilliant Brazil side that took your breath away. Players like Zico, Falcao, Eder and Socrates that many of us were seeing for the first time and playing a style of football that dreams were made of. They were beaten by Italy, the eventual winners, in the '82 tournament but this was as a result of their defensive frailties which was the unfortunate downside of their attacking excellence. Without a doubt (IMO) the best side ever not to have won the world cup and probably the second best side behind the '70 Brazil side who I have only had the pleasure of watching on video.
I genuinely don't recall this being the case back in '82. They were the days before money had ruined football and before the days of football overdose on TV. A lot of the players we say back then were, to some degree, unknown quantities because there was so little football on the TV. The Brazilian teams always had a reputation because of their previous teams at earlier tournaments.
Although it was before my time, I'm guessing that Holland 74-78 must also be up there with the best sides never to have won the tournament.
first i remember was Mexico 86 i think when maradonna did his hand of god against us. I was only a nipper.
Me too. Remember getting very upset watching that match, but don't recall much else from the tournament.
I only remember the '78 Dutch side and while they were undoubtedly a superb and arguably a more organised side than the '82 Brazil side I personally don't think they were as exciting to watch or attackingly potent as the '82 Brazil side. One things is for sure and this is that it would be a fantastic game to watch.
Tuesday, June 26th, 1990... what does that date mean to all of you on here ?. Well first of all it was the date (during Italia '90) when we beat Belgium in the last minute of ET thanks to David Platt's volley. And for me personally it was also my 19th birthday, so you won't be surprised when I say that is my favourite WC memory of all time!.
Believe me it was the only topic of discussion the following day (Monday) at school, and even the teachers were arguing about it. We did very little school stuff that day, it was ALL about football and that hand of god incident!.
When I was younger, the anticipation of the World Cup and then watching it was almost intoxicating. Seeing all those wonderful footballers from practically every continent on the globe seemed magical to me. I loved watching the 1970 Brazil side, the best football team (with the best ever player in Pele) I've seen. The Dutch teams of the 1970's and the 1982 Brazil team were probably the best teams never to win the tournament, in my opinion. These days, sadly, I'm indifferent to the competition. The only reason I've any interest in the current England team is because I took pleasure in watching Stones, Trippier & Butland playing for Barnsley earlier this decade. Watching Barnsley next season will mean far more to me.
