Best of Barnsley

Apart from the shrine we all worship at - Oakwell where else in the borough do you visit and the world feels good?
Mine got to be Locke Park. Grew up in it almost as lived so close.

The sad thing about Lock park is that the tower has almost dissappeared from veiw because the trees arround it have been allowed toget so tall.
Five years ago you could see the iconic landmark from almost anywhere in th borough.

 

Used to be a wonderful park when I was a kid. Only been a handful of times since, last maybe about 3-4 years ago when I decided to walk through it to pick up my mums Christmas turkey from Rob Royd. It felt soulless and unloved. The tower was closed, I'm not sure the lions were even there at the bottom of the alphabet steps. The greenhouses long gone and the café boarded up.

No idea if its had any tlc or investment, a crying shame if not. Spent many many hours playing football but more commonly cricket there.

Like you say, it used to be somewhere to enjoy. I remember hardly being able to see any grass in that area near the cafe because there were so many people there on a Sunday or Bank Holiday. The big aviary; greenhouses with banana plants in them; bandstand in use; the tower open occasionally and the iconic flower gardens with lions and alphabet steps.

My memory of the cricket field was a huge area on quite a slope so how did people play cricket on it? Football (coats for goalposts obviously) was common. We even went there from Broadway to play on it sometimes, maybe if the school pitches were unfit for some reason.

I always look over the wall when I am driving past on match days. It’s not what it was but I’m glad it’s still there.

 

I spent most of my childhood in Locke Park, playing either football or cricket. Back in the 70's there was an 18 hole pitch n putt golf course as well as crazy golf and tennis courts. The cafe was in constant use, although to be honest it's in better condition now than then, and there was a team of full time gardeners located in the park itself. I was brought up in close vicinity to the park and still live in the area now.
Loads of happy memories of the place.
It's still a nice open space I suppose but other than the excellent play area for small kids the place is a bit empty and soulless these days.

Looks better now than it ever as. Brilliant kids play area amd cafe thats packed out during any decent weather.

 

Are the greenhouses back? Can't remember when they got vandalised and then sadly removed. Must've been a good 25-30 years ago.

 

Most places from the above lists plus Notton Wood where we used to go bunny wooding. Do kids do this now - bet they don't?

 

Bloody hell. Didn't realise we were only allowed to appreciate muck stacks. I'd suggest you go look at those views, they're a superb advert for the town. I'd add the view from the top of Woodhead as you come back into Barnsley from t'other side. You can see as far as Ponty and Donny from up there.

 

Surely that comment belongs in the Made Me Laugh thread?

 

That's a quite magnificent view on a clear day. You can get a decent similar one by driving up to Hartcliffe Tower above Penistone and looking back towards Barnsley. But the crowning glory for me is the view from Holme Moss (even though it's not in Barnsley) looking back towards South Yorkshire. It's a bit tory, but a magnificent view nevertheless.

 

You’d have to include just about every inch of the Yorkshire Dales in that category. I’m on the very edge of them here but honestly, it’s so embarrassing going out of my door and seeing all that greenery and undulating countryside. And going to watch Harrogate Town? The ground is full of Tories. They don’t shout like we do when they score. They just twirl their yellow and black scarves and sing “Rah rah rah. We’re going to smash the oiks!”. Such fun.....
