I've been offered a deal by Virgin to replace my ageing Galaxy S4, a Samsung J3 foc....2 yr contract , 4G, 1000 minutes ...2gig data....£10.50 per month for the first year... £6.00 pm for the second.
Someone has told me the phone is crap...what do others reckon?

    J3 v your current s4.

Worse quality camera, worse battery life, less storage. It will have updated android - and so will likely run slower as the j3 has less ram.

It’s not a bad phone as such, and you’ll not get loads better for that monthly price. But the s4 when they released it was their best phone - the J3 doesn’t even begin to compare to the S9 range.

Maybe look at a Sony phone, get better spec on the same OS for less money generally. I have a virgin contract for my son with a Sony phone, got it on a Black Friday deal last year.

If you ring them up you might even get a free PS4 with a Sony phone. Sell it if you don’t want it.

Horses for courses. I've got a J3 and so has my missus. We've not had them long, and we're strictly Pay As You Go, but neither of us is too bothered about using a mobile 24/7 or doing anything funky with it. The camera is adequate, but for £100 I wouldn't have expected it to be any more than that. My only bugbear is the lack of a magnetic sensor, which makes anything that depends on a compass reading (e.g. an astronomy sky-watching app) completely useless. But I suppose you gets what you pays for. If you're a serious phone-head, I imagine you'd prefer something a bit more up-market, but the J3 is fine for old goats...

Not a very good phone at all, it's always cheaper if you can to buy the phone separate and go sim only.
Use a interest free credit card or Argos card with 9 month's interest free.
Then when you go sim only you will get a much better deal as you are no "paying"for the phone as part of the contract.

    Go to CEX.
Get a second hand handset for nexr to nowt. Ive got a j6 i paid 120 for not long after they were released on the market.
You can get a decent phone for 150-160 tops. Go sim only.
Get a good deal on that... i pay monthly with 02. 12 quid calls and texts unlimited and i get 8g of data.
    No contract.
    No regulated credit agreement.

Go to O2 site - as new handsets. Last time I looked they had Moto G5 or Huawei Y6 for about £70. They'll unlock it for you, then get a sim-only deal from Virgin or whoever and off you go. Handsets are basically brand new. Had my last 2 phones from them.

I've been on the J3 since the early part of this year (Virgin's deal). I think the phone is an absolute cracker. The 4G capacity is great, and it does everything I can think of (and probably a few things I can't!). For context, I was switching from an elderly Galaxy S2, and there is an obvious difference in sets there. But I really can't fault the phone. And that deal is way cheaper than some of the more recent 'sexy' phones. I'd say go for it.

P.S. It also connects seamlessy with Android Auto in my new VW Polo and makes a brilliant satnav on the touchscreen.

Got a Motorola G6 plus. Excellent value and for a (higher end) budget phone has many features AND the Android is 'clean' and isn't bloated with crap like some versions. Good camera and fantastic battery life with turbo charge too. Little point in paying flagship prices when you can get something as good as this for a fraction of the cost.

Son has J3. it is laggy, regularly freezes requiring re-start and will not update for lack of space despite there being Gb's of free space. His mate has one same. Seems to have a much higher than average chance of getting a wrong 'un.

I had a Sony when I was with Vodaphone. Left them eight months ago to join
Virgin. I pay £9 per month for the Samsung J3 and have unlimited texts and calls. Have to say it does
everything I need it to do. Vodaphone were all over the place with their billing and thus far Virgin have
    got it spot on.

I can't comment in the context of an overall deal for phone and package as I buy SIM Free phones and have a SIM Only contract, but I've currently got a Moto G4, it's the first time I've kept a phone for more than 2 years. It's been, and still is, fantastic, a bargain at £140. Storage space is good and can expand with a Micro SD card.

I'll probably look at the G6 or whatever the next model is when I need to replace the G4. I've never paid more than £200 for a phone.

The Huawei P20 Lite looks good too. I managed too get a deal via EBay and Quidco for a SIM Free version for £199 once cashback comes through.

I don't understand this fascination with having the latest handset. I'm glad that some people do though. They keep giving me their hand-me-downs. I was perfectly happy with an iPhone 4S until I dropped it and smashed the screen. I'm now using an iPhone 5S. I have yet to come across anything it struggles with or can't do.
