I know this figure is often mentioned and was reported by some French newspaper at the time but we definitely didn't pay 1million pounds to sign him. The actual figure was 500K and that included add-ons that haven't been triggered yet so we've paid about 300K to date. We also recruited him as winger not a striker.
He was a risk. I don't mind them spending on a player. I like to see Barnsley being active in the market. Now I wouldve been a bit miffed if we took the gamble on a 31 year old last pay day seeker who wasnt very good.
I don't mind him. He's scored some crackers for us this season and adds a bit of excitement. I certainly won't hammer him because he missed a penalty in a meaningless cup tie. I don't think anyone was moaning about Thiam or his price tag/whether he'd been scouted when he scored against Luton, Fleetwood and Oxford.
www.transfermarkt.co.uk are usually spot on with these things and they say the total deal was worth £900k.
Not necessarily... Just seen a double decker go past with "WE PAID £1M TO EUROPE FOR THIAM" written on the side of it. Must be true then.
So if we recruited him as a winger rather than a striker that means we started the 2017-18 season with just two strikers, Bradshaw & Ugbo who’d never played senior football before. Talk about setting up to fail. That makes last summers recruitment even worse. There’s no wonder the manager walked out
He has a hell of a strike on him. Little else has been forthcoming though. Excitement like when he repeatedly falls over the ball while running? I want every player in a reds shirt to succeed and hope he proves me wrong, but as yet I don't see a decent footballer in him just a lad who has a shot on him.
Thiam played most of his games in France on the wing he was always signed as a winger. I think it was always the managers intention to play 451 so we only needed 1 striker and a back up. He signed umpteen midfielders in close season. He played 451 when we had Bradshaw, Armstrong and watkins as striker options. Then went to play 451 at Leeds. He never walked he had been looking to exit for ages and his agent put him in the mixer for every job going....
In fact the pen last night was probably his best to date... at least he put it in a corner. The other 2 which he scored both keepers should have put their cap on em. For a player who's best asset by far is his powerful shot, why he doesn't just put his foot through em.. only he knows..
How come then when he plays for us out wide, he rarely plays well, because if he is a winger by trade you would think it would suit him.
I can't answer you that I remember hecky tried him upfront on his own v sheff Wednesday away and my son would of been more effective he is 8. Which wingers are good for us? Hedges has only ever look good from the bench, Potts hasn't played well for a good few games and let's not forget Lloyd although it's easy to do.
