Did anyone go to that Undr the Cosh at Oaks last night? Brilliant night. JH spoke very well of his time here and said it was best time of his career what we achieved
He said he agreed to the sale of Ashley Ward and everything he did as Manager he did for Barnsley Football Club and not JH
He also said in FA Cup in 2000(ish) v Leeds he walked past Barnsley Fans with his Daughter and they applauded him and sung his name and his Daughter started crying cause she thought Barnsley didnt like him after sacking him which he replied "Dont let 1 day get in way of 2.5 wonderful years"
A amazing night and a funny bloke too.

Top bloke. The missing piece in the promotion season jigsaw when we bought him.

His goals defo were the push that got us up. Was out of his depth as manager he was one of the boys and couldn't separate from it. Never take away from what he did as a player tho.

I don't think we gave him long enough. He needed another season after being thrown into management.

Totally agree. We were doing ok given the large number of injuries to the squad and him not being able to pick his best side.

Great player for us but I always thought it was a mistake giving him the managers job. I remember one game when he brought Matty Appleby off who was arguably our MoM at the time which raised a chorus of boos from the crowd. It just didn't work out for him.

Seen that interview on YouTube where he talks about the occasion at Leeds and his daughter crying. Brought tears to my eyes him saying he didn’t get chance to say goodbye to the Barnsley fans and the way he talks about the goal at Old Trafford in the FA Cup with his dad. Legend super John. Just started reading his autobiography.

I stopped in a hotel in Kos, Greece, last year where the Greek owner was football mad.
When he saw my son in his Barnsley shirt, he shouted (in his strong Greek accent) "Barnsleeee, the Hokewell Stadium. Super Jonny Hendreeee!!!".

Turned out he spends his winters travelling the world watching football and he came to Oakwell in the Prem season. The three things he remembered were the 'lovely people', the Super Jonny Hendrie song, and, rather randomly, getting pissed in The Moulders!!!

Johns a pal of mine - top bloke and can’t speak highly enough of the club. Played footy with him last year - still got the magic touch!

I met him in Ilkley in a pub earlier this year & he was really friendly & spoke highly of the club.

I agree with Mario that promoting him from player to manager probably wasn't the best move.
Top player for us. I have his autobiography somewhere in the house...

It's a great read. As a follow up and for a different viewpoint of the same era, Lars Leese's Keeper of Dreams is a must-read.

Laughed my pecker off at his little tale about when he was sat in the beer garden at some pub with a few of the players but couldn't understand how shez despite putting pint after pint away never went to the bog for a tinkle.....sithi.

Cheers I’ll look for that one after I’ve read Hendries.
