French International Kylian Mbappe has made a personal donation of £27 k towards a fund the search for the body of the pilot of the plane carrying Sala, David Ibbotson. What a Credit the lad is both to France and our the game of football. A magnificent gesture.
I get the sentiment completely and commendable so not knocking the donation, but I wouldn't glorify it on the basis of that is the equivalent of an everyday office worker donating 15 quid.. Mbappe makes 300k per week on basic salary alone. Much the same with Lineker donating 1k an unthinkable amount for the likes of me but change down the back of the sofa for Lineker. If I donate £10 to a charity (Which I do throughout the year) it's a considerable amount for me..
Not arguing with that statement - just curious but when you say rich "give less" what do you class as' rich' ? Anyone earning over.....? "Giving less".... Do you mean overall or average per person? I think the figures would probably show that, as a percentage of income, the rich donate less than middle income earners and looking at income groups the higher the income the fewer who donate (particularly in America). However those that do , particularly the hyper rich e.g. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett donate more in one year than the total donations made by thousands if not millions of middle/low income households do in a lifetime. I think if you got the statement from reading the Guardian it is far less black and white. Whatever, regardless of how much or how little anyone gives , and given middle and low income donations, IMO, are more genuine as they are not, as is the case of some rich donations accountancy driven e.g. tax deductible and so less altruistic , all should be applauded. EDIT: forgot to mention. Some large corporations (Like the one I used to work) for operate G.A.Y.E (give as you earn) which was a tax efficient way of donating since it was deducted monthly pre tax and the company matched your donation. So in effect shareholders (many rich) are donating as , obviously the matched amount/ and admin costs impacts on company profit in spite of being tax efficient for the company. I bet that doesn't show up in many calculations
i believe the amount is based on the cost of undertaking the private search. I think they used that up when they recovered Sala and now would need to go again having not recovered Ibbotson. Hence another 30K. You could argue, unless i'm wrong, he is funding almost all of the effort on the private side.
Any donation is a gesture, which is my point. So why not Bob from down the road who donates £15 in the news, when that £15 was indeed much more valuable to him than £27K to a multi millionaire?
I think it's also due to the fact that he is showing exceptional maturity for such a young man. He's spent his whole life being told he's going to be the best player in the world etc, and yet he's turning into a humble, charitable, and intelligent young man.
Because a) one is made by a 'famous' person, so is naturally more newsworthy and b) 27k while it may mean as much to the donator as a fiver to bob from down the road, it means a lot more to the receiver.
It's a big amount to most of us but the argument being made is based on percentage of weekly salary. He's on 290000 pounds per week so he's donated around nine and a quarter percent of his weekly wage. So it's like someone on 300 quid a week donating 27.75.
Well, from a purely monetary point of view, yes. If you’re needing £50k, £27k is a lot more useful than £15. Obviously everything helps, but from a purely monetary point of view, it contributes a lot more, regardless of the income of the donator.
I would wager it's because it's not newsworthy. To answer your question should we not ask who is publicsing this donation and why? - I would hazard that it's probably not the player himself - but probably the fund raisers. And I doubt whether the primary motivation is to applaud Mbappe - it's probably to raise more funds. It's likely their assessment is that publicity about Bob from Darton isn't likely going to motivate other players, other footballing organsations or indeed other Bob's to donate- and most importantly isn't going to attract the attention on the news that generates thousands more donations of a few quid from Bob.
Oh, Bob did.... Be like Bob.. Like I said, I wasn't knocking Mbappe because as correctly stated, he made the choice to donate and didn't have to and that is fantastic. My point was around how the media frame these things as if he had made a massive sacrifice.. But I guess that's just the media.
I don't know that the media have made out that he made a massive sacrifice. Certainly not from what i've seen.
