Just seen on the news that Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey has signed a four year contract
to play for Juventus from next season. The 28 year old will be the UK's highest paid
player on £400,000 per week. My wife was watching with me and doesn't known much
about football, but was right when she said " that is obscene." She's not wrong.!

The wages paid for playing football has gone way past obscene.

My first thought was not the amount - we already know the game is phucked - but Aaron Ramsey!?!?! Always thought he was just ‘okay’.

That is some deal he’s had brokered.

They should get his agent to negotiate a brexit deal, sort out Palestine and Israel, and have a coffee with Kim Jong-Un to discuss future tactics.

£1.6 million in his bank account every month, plus extras no doubt. This for a fairly average Welsh footballer. Makes you choke

but he will not be the UK's biggest paid player will he, as he will not be playing in the UK. He will be playing in Italy. He will not be paying UK taxes so for me he will not be a UK earner.... but yeah its obscene.

Of course it's obscene, but I find it more offensive when bog standard players at lower level are on 20/30k a week.

Exactly, less than 20 million in wages for a player worth 30 million, plus any money when they sell him

Mind I think he’s bang average so he’s done right well there!

What I find most obscene is that the wages of these people is expressed in weekly terms... which really makes it sound much much less than what it is.

    So lets express it correctly.

His annual BASIC salary, is £20.8m. That's before a golden hello (which I'll be staggered if he hasn't had negotiated), loyalty bonuses, image rights, goal bonuses and appearance bonuses. and some of his tax may get picked up by the club too which used to be a relatively common thing in Italy.

Not bad for a part time worker who has generally missed a good few months every now and then with injuries and really, has only ever had one good season.

The even more obscene thing is that some of the highest paid players in history have recently been found guilty of tax evasion. Both Messi and Ronaldo are technically criminals... yet they are get away with avoiding jail by giving a bit of tax back. That's what is most obscene.

I think football would have to completely collapse for salaries to get on par with those of non skilled part timer workers... which is what many of these people are.

If they're non-skilled, why aren't you earning £400,000-a-week at Juventus?

It sounds easy. Where do I sign up?

I'd go... but i'm not comfortable having to permascar my body with tattoos to fit in

Of course they are non skilled. I find it bizarre the flack business owners get for salaries a fraction of an average premier league footballer, yet footballers getting salaries of £10m+ a year are lauded. A few hours a week running about on a morning. Sitting on a coach and then potentially running about for 90 minutes.... Maybe not minimum wage... but I would probably pay them no more than living wage for what they do.
