Just under 15 years actually, still obscene though.

Indeed! Bearing in mine the nasty injury Ramsey suffered a few years ago, you can't blame him for wanting to make as much as possible out of the game. I'd certainly take what he's been offered!

Those saying he's average are being a little harsh on him. He's actually a very good player, when you compare him against Ozil for instance.

In todays inflated market paying £105m for 4 years is not as much as it sounds for a proven International player, with bags of experience in the Premier League.

As we have seen with players over the last few years going for £100m in transfer fees alone, plus Agents fees and wages, it makes those signings well in excess of £250m over the contract.

I'm not disagreeing these fees are insane though, I'm just adding a little perspective. Ozil is on c350k a week and he's absolutely gash; Ramsey is twice the player he is.

I can't think of many other sports where people so far outside of the top 100 in the world earn such insane salaries. Obviously team games are a little different, but for comparison I think I read that life is a massive struggle for any tennis players outside the top 75. In chess, which is apparently the world's most popular game in terms of active players, most people outside the world's top ten or fifteen would be advised not to give up their day job.

I was about to post that the root cause of all this is ourselves. Our willingness to pay over the top ticket prices and expensive tv packages is what fuels this obscenity.
It is a market economy and players are going to take advantage of it. We'd all do exactly the same.
However, on reflection, the real root cause is politicians who have allowed media companies to hoover up rights to virtually all top class sport and then bleed the public dry for the privilege of watching it.
Golf, cricket, football, driving round in circles in motor cars etc, etc all held to ransom by Sky etc.
In a country where all parties lie through there teeth about commitment to public health and participation in sport they are content to let interest in sport wither due to a chronic lack of access to it on mainstream tv.
But then you look at the state of the country at the minute and you'd have to be deluded to expect any real support of the public good from that partisan mob at Westminster.

Can’t say I’d be willing to pay £25 to watch a game of chess though... or watch it on PPV.

Market forces are the dictator of wages. That and the Bosman ruling.

You've obviously not seen some of the current Russian or Ukrainian ladies players!
