are we football supporters more morbid or mawkish than others?

Cardiff City ground is awash with floral tributes to Emiliano Sala -- pre-match minutes silences have ben observed and there is are plans to build a shrine to him in Cardiff.

Similarly at Elland Road last month many floral tributes.

Hundreds of floral tributes to Gordon Banks at Stoke City and no doubt we will have a minutes silence before Saturday's match.

Why do we as football supporters feel the need to do this?

No, it's just how society is these days. Whenever something bad happens people are falling over themselves to make as big a show as possible to demonstrate that they care. It's been a trend since the country lost its collective mind over Diana's death.

    I agree.

I don't understand why Gillingham fans and Barnsley fans were invited to or expected to participate in applause for Sala.

    He meant nothing to me.

I'm not pleased he died, and I'd rather he was still alive, but it's not my club; he didn't play for us.

There ain't enough time in the day to feel sad about everything even if I wanted to.

I don't understand why being a fan of a particular club maps to being expected to care about a random player from a random club (whom I hate, as it happens.) I didn't applaud and am content with that.

As for Cardiff fans? They can and should be able to mourn in any way they want for as long as they want. It's for them to rationalise it and to grieve and respect their man in their own way.

But the 'football community' does not exist as far as I am concerned. I support Barnsley, not football.

He wasn’t really a Cardiff player either though

That's how I feel. Clubs didn't have a silence for Patrick or Norman and I wouldn't expect them to because neither had anything to do with other clubs. The same way that whilst the Leicester owner and Sala were tragic circumstances I don't see why we were getting involved.

Gordon Banks though he deserves an applause on Saturday as a legend of English football that gave our country a moment that hasn't been created since.

It will be 91 years since Rev Tiv Preedy died on April 26th 1928 at the young age of 65, on the 27th April we play Blackpool at home I reckon we should have 91 mins applause for the man that made us.

    He bloody well deserves it.

Yes I know that, I mean for them to be mourning him as one of their own. I understand paying respect etc. But other than him signing a contract there’s little to mourn

I never realised we got promoted to the prem on the anniversary of his death. Or maybe I did and I've forgotten. Either way, thanks for the info.

Absolutely agree about the Diana reference. I was as shocked about hearing the news as the next man or woman, but I didn't feel as though I had to rush down to Kensington Palace to display my grief and add to the flower collection.

These tributes really are getting out of hand. As mentioned above let's be sorry for the death of a young man, footballer or not, but let's not make it into a national mourning thing. Then again, saying this, I will be accused of being disrespectful, which is a long way from the truth. I just give my respect to people or causes that mean something to me, not to those who mean absolutely nothing to me.

I may be wrong but I thought that some clubs actually did.
