The current Mrs Didcot Red's late uncle, Maurice Owen. He served in the Far East in WW2. Came back and played for Abingdon Town before Swindon Town snapped him up. In the era of the maximum wage he turned down moves to 1st division clubs as he preferred to be close to home. He is an absolute legend in Swindon. Check out his record on Wikipedia.

Little Lee's lot may suggest John Ateyo. England international centre forward playing for a 3rd division club. Again in the maximum wage era.

What about Alick Jeffrey? Seems to be a bit like Donny's version of Tommy Taylor but had very bad luck with injuries.

This is total pedantry, but he came on as a sub once for West Brom in the top flight before he was at Wolves.

Mr.A.H.Chequer. Scored the winning goal for The Wanderers in the first ever FA Cup Final in 1872.
    Rayt laker.
But, like Martin Peters, a player ahead of his time as there was no league football until 16 years later.
Legend has it that Bernard Cribbins sang Abide With Me before kick off too.

I want to say Brian Clough, but I think he may have played 2 or 3 games for Sunderland in the first division just before he retired. They might have been promoted at the end of the previous season. His time with Middlesbrough was all second division.
