Even stupider idea is making old railway lines walkways in the first place. If you ever want to make them back into viable rail route's you have the ramblers objecting.

There is rarely a good view too, as most of the time you are walking / cycling through a railway cutting. They are OK for family cycling trips I guess.

When I first read this I thought it said "plan to tarmac over the Lake District" and assumed it was one of Boris's proposals, once he is elected as Tory leader & sadly for us all becomes PM.

Walked it many a time out to Threkeld for a few pints at the bottom of Blencathra before catching the bus back into town.

    Signed.

    Most likely a cycle route.

As a cyclist I generally prefer tarmac but I have to say that it's not really appropriate in this case. A couple of weeks ago we cycled the Monsal trail (Bakewell to near Buxton) and the surface there is not tarmac (except in tunnels) and I had no problem with it at all.

The operative word being "IF". Apart from heritage railways I don't think its ever happened yet.

Worsbrough to Wombwell on the TPT used to be a quagmire till they tarmacced it. Cycle it in half the time now. Monsall trail is mainly hard-core so may as well finish the job there as well.
