Before the start of the season I bought an all-electric car, which means that, as I travel from Northampton, I need to recharge my battery in Barnsley in order to be able to get back home. This can take up to 6 hours depending on the rating of the charger.

On match days, with the closure of the Market Gate car park, there is only one public charging point in Barnsley, which is in the Gateway Plaza car park. The charger is more often than not occupied when I get there. There is a second charging unit, but this has been out of use for nine months.

In August I wrote to the Chief Exec of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council asking if more charging units could be installed. At the same time, I wrote to Dane Murphy asking if charging points could be installed at the ground.

After a few weeks I got a response from BMBC’s Customer Feedback and Improvement Team stating how committed the council was to renewable energy and that by 2025 10% of the car parking places in the town will have chargers. I did not get a response from Dane Murphy.

In November I wrote to Dane Murphy expressing my disappointment at the lack of response. He did not reply.

In December after the Hull City game, when again I was unable to charge my car, only saved by the super charger at IKEA in Sheffield, I wrote a further letter to the Chief Exec of BMBC suggesting that their response showed a lack understanding of the issues associated with driving an electric car. I also wrote a further letter to Dane Murphy saying I was dismayed not have heard from him.

I received a letter from The Chief Exec of BMBC advising me that she has had asked the Service Director, Environment and Transport, to investigate the situation and respond. I did not receive a response from Dane Murphy

I have yet to receive a response from Service Director, Environment and Transport.

In January I wrote a 4th letter to Dane Murphy which was sent recorded delivery and included “To have ignored three formal letters addressed to you is truly shocking and demonstrates your total disdain for a lifetime fan of the club” and “When the current owners of the club took over, they outlined how supporters would be at the forefront of their focus with communication and the match day experience leading the way. It would appear that either their focus has changed, or you are out of step with the culture”

I have still not had a reply

It would be difficult not to come to the conclusion that Barnsley Borough Council and its executive team are more in tune with the nineteenth century fossil fuel era than leading the way in the twenty-first century green technology.

I have always believed that the CEO should provide the vision, leadership, and set the tone of the business. Is this one of the reasons why our club is in trouble?

It is really disappointing that now if I wish to watch my team play, I have to choose between adding as much as 2-3 hours to my journey by driving into Sheffield and charging there or driving up in my daughter’s diesel car. I think it’s time for the club/council to commit to some material changes ready for the start of the 2020/21 season. It is not an unreasonable time frame.

Charging point in Hoyland car park not locked at night .Problem is people ignore that it's a charging point sometimes and park there with non electric cars during day time.access is on entering town centre immediate left of co-op funeral directors.west street.its on your left at end of car parking spaces on that side.

to me this is the great failing of electric cars, their range. Seems that 200 - 250 is the limit, and the charge time is immense. So until they develop one with at least twice that range and half the charge time, then I am not interested

I've had an idea for a while that why don't car manufacturers build cars with removable batteries that are all the same specification. Or maybe 3 different kinds depending on the car needs.
So they can build stations with batteries already charged and all you do is pay your money, take your battery out of your car and put it into the station and a fully charged one pops out ready to insert into you car. They would be pretty easy to have anywhere where needed.

I speak from experience of owning a PHEV and also being a contractor who installs these charging points.

Whilst Dane should have come back to you, his answer will be no.

The cost of such an installation, such as Oakwell, is massive and pointless for the amount it would get used. Even if the club itself adopted a policy for players and staff to have electric vehicles, it’s still a massive cost to have a proper commercial setup.

This cost will come down, and in the future they will install chargers for staff usage, but right now, the money is better spent elsewhere.

As for BMBC, I agree more charge points need to be installed, and they will over time. They obviously need to be pay-as-you-go ones.

The ones at Fox Valley work really well and are simple contactless payment ones.

You've bought electric too early mate, especially if you're coming north of Birmingham. The technology, resources and charging points simply aren't in place yet, therefore I cant see the point paying a fortune for a full electric car and not be able to use it fully.

Most of the chargers including the one at Hoyland and at Meadowhall are 7kw which only charge at around 15m an hour so it would take a 6 hours charge to be able to get back home. The one at IKEA is 49kw which means it will charge to 80% capacity in around 45mins (less than the time it takes to walk round). I agree with an earlier post, in that use of the chargers should not free or subsidised by ratepayers.
