Fancy that a Tory donor who makes vacs getting the go ahead to sort us out with life saving equipment instead of getting them from specialist manufacturers.

It also turns out its ********
    https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/breaking-thousands-new-coronavirus-ventilators-21758563

And they ignored a specialist manufacturer who offered them 5000
    https://thenantwichnews.co.uk/2020/...t-over-delay-after-offering-5000-ventilators/

I still dont understand why we didnt join the EU scheme - there are times when political ideology should take a second place to saving lives

    *shakes head*

Are you really saying that you dont understand the reasons why we can't rely on getting the equipment from specialist manufacturers? I.e. every bloody country in the world wants more of them right now.

The government have asked for help in producing them quickly from a variety of manufacturers not just Dyson. Personally, if I needed one, I wouldn't give a **** whose logo was stuck to the front.

I think it shows the ingenuity of our best people in this country that the very idea of a company dropping everything and turning their hand to making ventilators is even possible. I can only applaud them and dont care where their political allegiances lie.

Once again, politics doesn't matter right now.

I have no problem with the Government using whatever means it can to get the equipment it needs and the Dyson Ventilators is not a silly idea especially as I believe they can run off batteries - which could be important in a field hospital
I do have a problem with this being announced when they are months away - possibly when its too late - getting type approval for medical equipment is not a trivial quick form filling exercise - we have established suppliers saying their offers have been ignored It would be good to know why that is

Trouble is they will only work for up to 30 minutes and then have to be put on a 12 hour charge.

Dyson didn't design them it was a bunch of people in Cambridge (TTP). And G-Tech had a working prototype last week.

Dyson don't manufacture in the UK so they still have to get here (and undergo certification).

And apart from ignoring the UK-based manufacturers of ventilators - and the Polish company that has a 3D printable version that costs under £50 (but also needs certification).

UK to 'consider' EU ventilator scheme after all

The UK government was being hit with criticism earlier for not joining a EU scheme to get ventilators to the health providers that need them.

But it seems like it was just a case of the invite being lost in the mail.

The prime minister's spokesman said this morning that the UK was "making it's own efforts" to source more ventilators.

But this statement has now been updated to say: “Owing to an initial communication problem, the UK did not receive an invitation in time to join in four joint procurements in response to the coronavirus pandemic."

The spokesman says the European Commission has confirmed the UK is eligible to take part in any further procurements though during the so-called transition period after Brexit.

So, he adds: "We will consider participating in future procurement schemes on the basis of public health requirements at the time."
