Doing something they haven't done in hundred years. 650 police all along the border to make sure the rule is stuck to. 55 entrance points being patrolled. Heavy police presence in and around a tower block with 69 Covid cases so those living there don't leave the building. Six more weeks of strict lockdown put in place. Got to hand it to the Aussies, when they lock down they mean locking down.

Is 191 new cases significantly high in a population of 6.5 million? Barnsley had a rate of 45 per 100,000 last week which would equate to around 3,000 per 6.5 million. They don't piss about them Aussies.

The cases are local now so not been brought in to the areas. Six weeks locked down for less than 200 cases in a city of millions would suggest the worst is yet to come. Like when we locked down with a few dozen deaths but the government knew what was coming. Hopefully for Melbourne this will deal with it and we won't see the situation escalate for them in the next few days.

Am curious how it managed to get into the population. Australia was seen as almost COVID-free and opened back up. Was it imported from overseas, or was it lying dormant in asymptomatic spreaders.

The infection rate in the population of Melbourne (and Beijing) was significantly lower than it is now in England.

It actually looks like their first wave is happening now, they suppressed it earlier, maybe too successfully?

The ridiculous state of what's happening in Victoria will be giving our own PM ideas. Yesterday in Victoria they announced 7 new deaths. Six of these were in aged care and all were aged 70+ with 3 in their 70s, 2 in their 80s and 2 in their 90s. So today they have gone really strict and controlling even putting in a curfew so people are under house arrest nine hours a day. Governments controlling their people by taking away freedoms is far more worrying than the virus.

Every life matters mate, regardless of anyone’s age race or colour.
An unstoppable virus with no vaccine. This is worrying times.

Absolutely agree. Just don't think 7 deaths, six of which were people indoors all the time is the time to put extra restrictions on people there.

I kinda get where you are coming from but where do you draw the line as to where Covid deaths become unacceptable?
To me 7 deaths are 7 too many and a lock down to protect the many is acceptable.

More than 600 new cases recorded overnight, earlier in the week the number of new cases overnight approached 900. The virus is spreading across Victoria faster than previously and mostly because people won’t use common sense. Of 300 people who were tested recently and should’ve been self isolating, 130 weren’t at home when they were visited to be told they’d tested positive. Another 100 today hence ‘the ridiculous state of what’s happening in Victoria’.

Australia imposed compulsory 14 day quarantine for all incoming international travellers, housed in hotels paid for by the state. A security guard employed to enforce the quarantine became infected and took it home to his family and tower block from where it has spread. Lockdown was relaxed and people didn’t respect social distancing or the limits to the number of people at gatherings.

We'll be in the same boat before too long. Wearing face coverings seems to have replaced social distancing and any semblance of common sense. I'm moving out of peoples way in the streets and the buggers change course and veer towards me. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes back with a vengeance once the weather turns cooler.

Melbourne already had one costly lockdown March-May which they thought had got cases down to zero.

Now they are locking down again. So where do they expect to be in another 3 months? Is it a sustainable response?

Whats theirs? I'm not saying I have a answer here. Just it seems that whatever you do you are going have the virus spread. You can't shut down indefinitely.
Originally I thought he idea was to stop health care getting overwhelmed and leading to people dying who could have been saved. With a sad acceptance that a new contagious virus would lead to a unavoidable increase in deaths rates among certain groups as it first spreads.
I'm just lost as to what the alternative is? Are we wating it out for a vaccine? Nobody seems to be saying. It's just seems to be a policy in many countries of let's hope something happens.

I totally agree with all you say mate. So here we are up a creek with no paddle. Govt are less than useless in their pathetic attempts to do something. All advice they give is confusing and usually too late.
Money has to be spent to help everyone and businesses. Remember there has always been plenty to spend on Trident, HS2 and not forgetting £1m to paint a Union Jack on a plane. That in the situation we find ourselves in atm just sums up how pathetic and out of touch this tory govt is.
There is plenty money out there but its wasted on all the wrong things.

As I said on the other thread we have a PM who wanted to be PM he didn't want to actually have to do anything like actually govern the country.
