It comes down to people abiding by the temporary restrictions to see it off. The previous lock down failed but almost succeeded. The security guards employed to enforce the hotel quarantines were poor. Report of one having sex with someone they were supposed to be guarding for instance. The government paid them up to $70 per hour but there weren’t enough guards so companies sub contracted the work and apparently some of the sub contracted in turn sub contracted the work. Several subs down, the pay was nowhere near €70/hour and you get what you pay for. It was as also alleged that an infected family took the virus to an Eid celebration at the end of May where a large number had gathered contrary to lockdown restrictions.
That seems to be all it took to start the whole thing off again. It completely undermined the lockdown, it’s cost, the jobs lost and the companies that closed permanently.
It’s down to people and attitudes to make any solution work.

Lad I went to school with, my age, strapping lad, no underlying health issues. Killed him. Went on a ventilator following week he arrested and died. It’s serious

Australia is screwed. So is New Zealand. They effectively eradicated Covid earlier this year. There have been more cases on my street than in either. Yay, success. But if they want to trade, if they allow travel, it comes back. And is rampant as no one has any immunity. So they can't do either. So no one in and no one out. Darling Harbour in Sydney, hundreds of bars and restaurants around a beautiful dock, teeming with tourists. And now it's empty. And then we get poverty...

Unless they and us and everywhere else reach herd immunity then this thing we call life is over. And if you find anyone arguing against that (which means everyone at the moment) ask them when they had their flu jab this year, each and every part of that cocktail more deadly than the virus they're hiding from now. Why didn't they? Why do they feel protected?

Haha yeah but you are only half right.
Covid figures and deaths due to the virus are considerably less here than in England which is all down to Nicola being more proactive and competent in dealing with this pandemic.
We are so lucky to have her.
Btw did you see only last week she was voted the 5th best leader in the world?

I don't mind her one bit: she's 100% more desirable than the twits we have down here. Of course Scotland has a much less density of population overall but she has managed covid exceptionally well. It would appear that the people of Scotland appreciate each other much more than we do here.

Unfortunately there has been a spike in Aberdeen. 13 new positive cases and I’m sure there will be more. This thing is real.

Have to say she's handled the whole crisis very well, unlike Hancock & Johnson, who really should just concentrate on comedy.

Can someone explain to me how locking people up for 9 hours a day and condensing people's business into 15 hours instead of 24 hours helps stop the spread? Surely giving people less time to do things like shopping means they'll be more densely packed together when they do go?

It's like we've somehow become them religious weirdos that like self-flagellation, like somehow the more pain we cause ourselves it will somehow be paid back.

Herd immunity depends on the development of a vaccine. We might never get a vaccine.

There is a possibility that it will mutate into a less fatal variant.

My daughters friends mother (if that makes sense) is now positive with COVID for the second time...

As Chris Whitty says, this is potentially something we could be living with for a long time. Australia went down the route of a "Zero COVID" strategy which is starting to look unattainable unless you remain locked down until there's a vaccine. All it takes is one imported case to slip through the net, a few days of community asymptomatic transmission, and you're straight back into full lock down and all the economic consequences that has. As the population becomes increasingly fatigued by the restriction on freedoms, its only going to get more difficult to achieve and maintain a zero COVID state.

I don't know what the solution is, but it doesn't feel like complete eradication is going to be achievable, particularly given the amount on international travel into and out of the UK.

TBH I think she has done very well with the way she has handled the Covid crisis
I still don’t think she’s good with the everyday stuff though.
