I’m going to put forward 2 assumptions here, which to be fair are MASSIVE assumptions and for the most part based on very little evidence, but for the sake of the hypothetical question, just assume they’re true if you can.

So, assuming this Covid vaccine goes through all the usual testing, accreditation, approval etc. (which are to my understanding well regulated and standardised) and also assuming that no corners were cut during the development process, would you take the vaccine if it meant a return to normal life? If no, have you taken other vaccines? What was different about those vaccines?

Also if your answer to this is yes but it’s a no without the assumptions, what in particular worries you about it?

And for the record I think both of my assumptions are probably true, I just have no direct evidence for such so didn’t want to present it as fact.

Can't see a reason not to take a vaccine. To kill the disease we need most people vaccinated.

I'd take it definitely. I have the flu vaccine every year and as a traveller I've had yellow fever and hepatitis jabs. I also had polio, diphtheria and TB jabs as a young un. I didn't have measles or rubella jabs and caught them both.

I'd definitely take it. Why on earth would anyone not? It should be a no brainer but I'm afraid for some that isn't the case.

Its unclear at present if my wife will be able to take it, so still a long way to go for us. She's not able to vaccinate against yellow fever either, something about a "live" aspect in vaccinations. So on that basis, and seeing as its unclear whether these vaccinations prevent transmission, I'd be in the same boat until she's able to have something that doesn't harm her.

I'd take it and no questions.

I put pies in my body that have had no testing.

I drink beer that has been no where near a laboratory

A vaccine that has been through enough testing to pass the MHRA certification - definitely

None of the three vaccines that have made headlines recently are based on live vaccines, to the best of my knowledge.

I must admit, I wasn't especially listening when she told me what it was all about,,,, but ssshhhh, don;t tell her! ;-). But I do recall her consultant had contacted all of the people on the drug she has to take every 8 weeks and told them they mustn't take any of the vaccines until further evidence is gathered. I did hear Oxford are working on something specifically for those with impacted immune systems.

Still undecided because a few years ago I had a flu jab and I ended up the worst flu I've ever had. Knocked me dead for 2 weeks. I will never have another flu jab. It's the fact that you're putting something in your body that you don't know what it is. However, if it helps get back to a normal life then I'd seriously have to consider it

I wouldn’t volunteer at present, because I’m 28 with no serious medical conditions so don’t see the benefit to be honest. It’s unlikely I’d be anywhere near in line to have it anyway. If I had to have it to access Oakwell/other entertainment I’d take it no problem.

If I were my grandparents who are all 80+ with various ailments, I’d be first in the queue.

I'll take it definitely, especially if it means getting back to seeing my parents and inside Oakwell - its a no brainer if you ignore all the loons on Twitter and facebook and look at the cold hard science.

See for me “I’m fine without it” isn’t a valid reason not to have it. There are many people that are unable to have it, along with the 5-10% for whom it will be ineffective. Surely just for the sake of those people it’s worth it?

I think he means he'll give up his place in the queue for the more vulnerable.

Personally I will take it. BUT really good points made by Lord Winston on Newsnight last night about the importance of communication and information, citing numerous examples of major scientific breakthroughs which have been problematic or failed because people's genuine concerns not being listened to or addressed (he used GM crops as an example).

He also made the point that the standard of certainty on safety has to be higher in a vaccine than for a drug. A drug is designed to treat people who are already ill and need positive action taking. Therefore the level of risk the person taking it - and administering it - is willing to accept is going to be quite high. It is a proportionate response that justifies the potential downsides.

But for a vaccine you are aiming to give it everyone, including people who may never catch the virus and if they do may not even have any symptoms. In that case the willingness to risk side effects from an individual is going to be lower, and the level of risk governments and scientists should be prepared to take should be lower.

On balance his point was the vaccine is a tremondous breakthrough, but there is a real risk that unless there is transparency on side effects and people's concerns are genuinely listened to and not dismissed then it will fail as people won't be reassured in enough numbers to take it.

It is impossible to catch flu from the flu vaccine- it is inert. The vaccine doesn't stop you potentially picking up something from elsewhere though. It was probably just bad timing. The same happened to my dad once.

Thanks for the info, but it must have been incredibly bad timing then, because I'd never had a full flu before....or since. :)
