The fit reds project, is a multi partnership alliance consisting of PSS community health trainers, Barnsley NHS, and Barnsley FC’s Community Sports and Education trust. The project was established in September 2010 with the aim of tackling male health inequalities within the Barnsley borough. So far, over 180 men have benefitted from the programme which has resulted in massive reductions in waistlines, blood pressure readings and weight, (Sept 10 – Oct 12). With the help of the BHF Hearty lives funding, the Fit Reds project will build upon this success and focus on targeting those men aged 35+ who continue to lead un healthy lifestyles. The project will aim to work with over 600 men in 3 years in an area where male health inequalities are amongst the highest in the country, with the average Barnsley man dying 1.8 years younger than the national average of 78. Participants will benefit form a 8 week activity and healthy lifestyles programme delivered by community health trainers which includes information and advice on healthy eating, followed up by a practical session delivered by Barnsley FC coaches. The sessions are normally delivered on Barnsley FC premises which adds to the professional feel of the sessions and aid the motivation of those who attend. The brand of Barnsley FC is a powerful tool in attracting men to the club and the club itself is very supportive in providing venue hire, accommodation and regular incentives to participants, such as match tickets
