I think you'd struggle to fine someone to come in & invest purely in the football club - remember, it has zero assets bar the player contracts.

Now, if they could negotiate a deal with Cryne & the Council for the land & stadium, that's a different thing. But then you're talking plenty more cash.

And you might also question their motives if, as Red Rain suggests, Barnsley Football Club is not capable of turning a profit, not a view I necessarily subscribe to. I can remember when Donny Rovers were taken over by an owner who recognised that the value of Belle Vue far outweighed the value of the football side of the business so proceeded to run the latter down (they ended up in the Conference) and planned to set fire to the stadium (he was charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit arson). The arrangement Patrick Cryne and Barnsley MBC came to was designed to prevent such a situation developing.

This thread seems to have been going on for a while.

Why this is the case, I do not know.

The OP sets off by posting summat pessimistic and grim beyond despair. Nobody would ever want to buy our club.

Then 2 posts in he slags someone off for "true negativity".

He is either the King of irony or taking the piss.

Same poster spent his time last season slagging LJ for denying us promotion. Cos according to him promotion was "impossible".

Got that wrong did he not? So with that track record it's reasonable to assume that the poster bathes in a pool of pessimism and inaccuracy.

Anyway, the Bruce Springsteen type poster was right a few days ago when he said that this board was slowly dying.

That's because it's now dominated by posters who have no sense of humour or semblance of encouraging character.

I should now come up with a joke in order to deflect the irony of my own post.

    Wibble.

    He was being ironic.

And it's widely accepted that we achieved the (almost) impossible last season.

We've had a season in the Premier League, accumulated a record 74 second tier seasons and won the FA Cup. In the last 20 years we've played at the national stadium 5 times and reached at least the quarter finals of the FA Cup 4 times. Five figure crowds are easily achieved when we are high enough in the football league pyramid. I don't believe that there isn't interest in buying the club.

Quite possibly there is interest in buying the Club. Do we want a Venkys scenario to play out at Oakwell where we question the motivation of the owner? Patrick Cryne has said that he wouldn't sell to someone whose interests in taking on the running of the Club were less than altruistic. Sadly for Barnsley Football Club the number of multi-millionaires with links to the area and a life-long interest in the Reds can probably be counted on one finger. If only Paul Sykes were interested but he, like Patrick Cryne, is no spring-chicken being in his seventies so, sooner or later the question of a successor would crop up.

I think you may need to revisit the date upon which our OP advised that the almost impossible was as such.

Portsmouth FC shat on everyone around it from a great height, only the fact the supporters bought it saved that club, Whether this guy taking over will be embraced by the locals is yet to be seen.

Just to clarify you are referring to the South Hampshire metropolitan area which includes Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Eastleigh, Isle Of Wight and SOUTHAMPTON. How many supporters do you reckon Pompey pull from there?

It annoys me people get annoyed about people getting population stats wrong and then get them wrong.

It's really got to you that, hasn't it? Why don't you remind me of the date? You've just said it was almost impossible. If you concede that it was "almost" impossible why would you have a problem with someone thinking it was impossible?

Not that it has any relevance to this thread.

I haven't got anything wrong. Populations have to be compared town/city with town/city and metropolitan area with metropolitan area. You didn't. You compared their city population with our metropolitan area for the convenience of your argument. Like many others do.

The "almost" bit of the impossible came from me quoting Redstar.

You may remember that you simply said it was impossible.

The metropolitan area of BARNSLEY. You have stated the metropolitan area of South Hampshire which includes all the towns and cities stated above including SOUTHAMPTON.

The population grid on the right hand side. I've realised now though that their local authority structure is different to ours, so you can't really compare like for like anyway.

As I have said, the figure you are quoting is for South Hampshire. The whole of the county has a population of 1.8m so 1.5m are not going to be in Portsmouth are they?

Their area is more densely populated than ours and most of the South Hampshire towns mentioned are as local to them as some of the districts in our borough are to us. They are also mostly Pompey strongholds. For example: Havant is a similar distance from Portsmouth as Hemsworth is from Barnsley, but it has 3 times the population. Gosport alone almost has the same population as Barnsley and is closer to Portsmouth than Dunford Bridge is to Barnsley. In a nutshell, their catchment area has a lot more people in it than ours.

Havant also has it's own semi pro team (as does Gosport) and Hemsworth is part of the city of Wakefield.
