So much for 50 points being the safety point. I've never really thought it was. Good to see one of the big clubs go down though. Shame they didn't take Forest with them. That point that Burton took from us last week has saved them. Had we beaten them, as we should have, they would have gone down instead.
Wouldn't really class blackburn as a big club much rather they had survived as they would have struggled again next season. Rather Birmingham or the scabs gone down instead.
Inclined to agree. The fact that the other two survives makes the division stronger next season, as I don't think either will struggle anywhere near as much as they have done this term.
Not necessarily big now, especially with their chicken farmer owners, but they have an illustrious history and have won the Premier League so yes, that makes them a big name, historically speaking. Same as the likes of Villa and the Sheffield clubs. Like it or not these clubs have much bigger names than ours will probably ever be. That doesn't give them any divine right to success though.
They are a town club same as ours were as our town battles with sheffield and leeds for support they are battling united and city. They won the premiership when their life long supporter jack walker pumped his millions into the club. I fear the worse for blackburn now because the owners run the club from the phone in India and don't give a **** about the club. I'd of much rather one of the big city teams have dropped.
They went down with 54 points which is the record. Had it not been for Jedenak though we would have gone down with 55 points. I think on average 50 points is enough 4 out of every 5 seasons but I haven't checked back to be certain.
In the last 10 years, Peterborough went down with 54 points in 2012/13 and Leicester with 52 points in 2007/08.
Makes a bit of a mockery of our 'good' season. 7 points off relegation and 20 odd away from the play offs.
When they beat us 5-0 in the second division (championship for you young 'uns) I went away in 1989. Attendance was 8,400, with 1000 away supporters. Not a big club. They were very well run until Venkys took over.
Further back I think Millwall went down with 50 points in 95/96 aswell, struggling to think of any others.
The fact that Rotherham got so few points necessarily means that the other 23 clubs got a few more. Had the Millers won a few more points would mean others would have got fewer. It's all about statistics.
I think it was more of let's get to 50 points, see where we are and then take it from there. Was it March when we got to 50?
Its also that unusually the sides fighting to avoid the last spot had late surges in form. Blackburn for example won 3 and drew 2 of their last 5 games, In a "normal Season" they would have dropped more points - (also Forest and Birmingham won 2 of the last 3) - its an unusual situation. Another season Blackburn would only have picked up around 5 points from their last 5 games and gone down with 45 points along with Wigan
