It's a long time ago. The records show it as 1961. I think I went to the final with school. I know/think that my then classmate Jimmy Greenhoff played, plus Ron Glover and John Hobson.. Can't remember much more, too much water under the bridge.

Thought it was a ,2 leg game against Liverpool boys. My mind might be playing tricks but I'm sure there was 20,000 plus for the Oakwell game. I think we won 2-0 after a 1-0 defeat in Liverpool. I'm pretty sure Alan Woodward played as well as Jimmy Greenhoff.

Alan Ogley in goal. Alan Woodward and Jimmy Greenhoff played. Lost 1-0 at Liverpool and won 2-0 at Oakwell. Jimmy Greenhoff was great throughout the tournament. I think John Hobson scores? I also think other games in the tournament were played at Oakwell - I seem to remember watching them in a win against Swansea Boys.

I remember watching the final at Oakwell. Jimmy Greenhoff was outstanding. Was it that season that in an earlier round we beat Spen Valley 16-0, also at Oakwell? Highest scoring match I ever saw. It was sometime around then.

Schoolboy football was different then. Impossible to imagine thousands watching them nowadays. I used to go on the school trips to Wembley from Broadway to see England Boys play. I seem to remember massive crowds above 80,000 for these.
Only one from Barnsley that I remember seeing was a left back called Geoff English who went on to play for Arsenal.

I knew Geoff well, played against him at school level and with him recreationally. He did not make it professionally. Phil Chambers played for England Boys at Wembley the year after Geoff I think.

We still see the odd schoolboy error at Oakwell though :(

Did Geoff go to Holgate? I have a vague memory of him being there and I'm sure I played against him for my school team. Very classy footballer but, as you say, he didn't quite make it at professional level. I am sure he signed for Arsenal though. Perhaps it was another case of a local lad signing for a big club when he should have started out at his home town club. Mind you, the state that we were in at that time you couldn't blame the likes of him, the Greenhoffs and Trevor Phillips looking elsewhere.

Trev was a powerful centre forward who I played against lots at local "rec level" (the one at the bottom of Harborough Hill rings a bell (The Fleets?). He had a heck of a hard shot and used to sting my fingers often - well, when I could get near one of his shots that is! He went to a bigger club in Rotherham who were Second Division at the time compared to our Fourth Division strugglers.

Alan Ogley had a decent professional career, starting in goal for us. I think he succeeded Alan Hill when he went off to Forest. Jimmy played for Leeds of course and Brian for Man Utd. John Hobson had a much more modest career, scoring a few for us from the wing. He was too skinny to make it to the big time. Alan Woodward became a Blades legend of course, dazzling defences from the right wing.

Oh yes, I forgot about Phil - Philip Martin-Chambers to give him his full name. Played for the Reds for many years and was a good, solid left back. Oh for a Phil Chambers today!
