Sorry for the off topic post but I'm looking at swapping in my car for something a little bit bigger. I was looking at evoques but I've been told they're rather unreliable so I've opted for my old mate Audi.

It's a choice between the Q3 and the Q5. Both seem to have their pros and cons but I was looking for a more working class review if that makes sense?

Need something bigger and abit more comfy than what I've got at the moment as I have Corda Equina syndrome (a serious back condition) so comfort is a big thing for me.

    Cheers folks.

Just got shut of a Q3. Boring to drive and if you suffer from a back complaint I'd steer clear. Only thing going for it was the elevated driving position.

Ah! Skoda - German parts, German (VAG) build quality, Czech rather than German labour prices. What's not to like (apart from misguided badge snobbery)?
Had my Yeti 2.0 TDi Elegance for 4 years now and it has performed faultlessly. (I needed a smallish 4x4 where we live to negotiate the narrow hilltop streets and numerous un-tarmaced roads)

Recommendations would be great. In not a badge snob however I do like my VWs.

Off to look at a mini countryman today... possibly the world's most ugly car. For some reason i seem to like em.

Peugeot 3008 is what I've got my eye on as my next car. The new style SUV not the older slightly odd looking one that doesn't know if its an SUV or an MPV.

Depends on how old you are looking at because they only came out this Feb so still brand new. But it is Whar Car car of the year 2017. Looks lovely inside and out and the reviews suggest it is set up for comfort. Massive step up in quality for Peugeot, like nothing they have ever done before. I have a 508 at the mo and it is very nice but this is a different class.

Hopefully not long now before ex demos start coming up on autotrader

I'm a courier by trade mate so I tend to see a lot of new cars as in walking down 150 drives a day. I saw the new 3008, i couldnt believe it was a pug. At first I thought it was the new Range Rover.... it looks rather nice and very roomy. I've had a quick look online at them and they're in budget so I've added it to my list.

It's amazing how different they are to the previous shape 3008. The previous was just a bog standard people carrier but the new one looks like a sporty SUV, smashing looking car.

Also have a look at the brand new Ford Edge mate, they're very similar to the new 3008.

I'll certainly take a look mate. I work all over the country so spend a lot of time in my car so what it looks like inside is very important to me and the 3008 looks like nothing I've seen before. I've wanted an SUV for a while but they are all so bland inside. Not this one, its beautiful. And it has the i-cockpit, similar to the audi one, where it does away with conventional dials and has a configurable screen positioned over the steering wheel which looks the business.

Any car that knocks the 3008 off the top of my wanted list is gonna have to be bloody nice :)

I got a Renault Kadjar recently. I'd have had a serious look at a 3008 if it wasn't for the horrendous lead time. Ditto the Sportage.

I know a few Skoda owners who are really pleased.

Yes, I've heard the lead time on new cars is around the 12 week + mark. But I always go nearly new anyway, so just biding my time until the demos come onto the market. Saw the first one this week, so am expecting that they may start coming out in numbers over the next month or two.

I dont understand why anyone actually buys a VW when you can get the same cars with a Skoda or Seat badge for much less money. Mate of mine managed to write off a golf when it was only 6 months old and replaced it with a Skoda Octavia with a better engine and better trim for less than the Golf cost - doesnt know why he got the golf first time round

Would agree with that. There are a number of very nice models in the Skoda line up. Anyonr who would buy a VW without even at least taking a look at the Skoda range because of badge snobbery is a fool. I have also read numerous suggestions that VWs are not what they used to be in the reliability stakes.

The new Octavia is beautiful. I had a good look at them but I need something abit higher up. Just looked at a countryman with 8 grand worth of extras on it... perfect for me! So comfy and had literally everything. I know they aren't the best looking of cars but it's looking like a winner for me.

Its not always about badge snobbery tho' . Although the the Skoda's are sound and under rated you also have to think about depreciation and what they'll be with in 3 years time compared to top end stuff .

I work for Skoda, the Kodiaq is the next step up in class. Every time we release a new model it's a new level is quality and refinement.
The Yeti replacement is something else too. Both SUV's are the real deal!

This is a very good point. I currently ha e a scirocco, I paid 14k for it 2 years ago. My mate bought a Seat Leon for 15k 2 years ago. My scirocco on part ex will fetch 11.5k but my mates Leon will only fetch 8k.

I love VW, you know exactly what you're getting. I've never owned a Skoda or a Seat so I'm sometimes put off... if they're just a VW under the bonnet then why do they lose so much value?

    Perception.

A car's second hand value is basically just a representation of what people are prepared to pay for it, same as a house. So "more desirable" cars will hold their value better. Hence, VW holding their value better because people continue to be willing to pay more for the badge, because they perceive VW to be quality, even though the reality over the last few years suggests it isn't all that. There's nowt so strange as folk, they say.

The 2016 driver power reliability survey, here

    http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-ne...ost-and-least-reliable-car-manufacturers-2016

When ranked by manufacturer, puts VW third bottom in 29th place. Skoda are 8th, and SEAT are 16th.

As usual all the Japanese brands come near the top, apart from Nissan who I believe have had a lot of problems with the latest generation Qashqai. It is interesting to note that all the French brands, which for years people have suggested are iffy quality (think Citroen and stories about electrical problems etc) are miles in front of VW.

Range Rover are near the bottom, which is not a surprise - as you say in the OP, there are lots of stories about problems with the Evoque's reliability.

Worringly for you, if you are thinking of a countryman, is that MINI are bottom of the whole pile.

Interesting read that, mate. Thanks for sharing that. Onto minis, where do I start? I'm an absolute fanatic when it comes to classic minis. I've owned 3, 2 of which I built from scratch. Since BMW bought the rights for Mini I was expecting a really reliable and steady drive. The reality is that BMW have stuck with the true mini values... leaks and unreliability! Both of which I actually quite enjoy. I've owned 2 BMW minis before, I had the Cooper and then the Cooper s john Cooper works.

I dunno what it is about mini... as an enthusiast I should hate the new style of mini, but I don't, I find them quite qwerky and much more fun than other cheap hatchbacks like the boring fiestas and even worse, the Corsa.

So yeah, I think it's going back to Mini for me! We've just applied for a loan and will get an answer inn the morning. With any luck I'll have my new motor by the end of the week!

Thanks for the advice chaps, infact you've actually convinced me so much on the Skoda I'm looking at a new Fabia diesel for the Mrs to use as a run around.

    Cheers gents.
