I went last year and spent all the time up rieperbahn way. Int the Tankstelle and London Bar. Proper **** holes tbf but had some good seshes. We went to see Hamburg footie team on the saturday and that was a great experience and would recommend if they are at home or St Pauli even (more of a peoples club). Steer clear of the 'lappers' proper rip offs, run by dodgepot eastern europeans. Nice city, if u venture that far

I'll back that up, if you go in any "clubs" or "unusual looking bars", don't just order a round of beers, check the prices first. A beer can cost €40 - €50 in some places. If you get ripped off, pay up and get out. You can argue about it if you want, but you'll come second.

Places to visit are the Rathaus (Town Hall), in the centre, Landungsbrücken (Jetty) next to the river where there's lots of small food places and the odd bar, Portugiesenviertel (Portuguese Quarter) where there's great seafood restaurants, if you're into that sort of thing, and the Fischmarkt (Fish market) where you can buy just about anything. It opens about 5 in the morning and lots of people just go there straight after a night out to look around and have breakfast.

Sternschanze. One stop up from St Pauli. Rough as you'll get and first impressions aren't appealing, but, you notice lasses and families walking about which kinda makes you wonder why you're being a big softie and you just get on with it. Full of bars and restaurants.

Centre isn't great for bars. More suited for shoppers and business folk. There are a limited few decent bars and restaurants opposite central station. A few bars in the station itself with double up as German food kiosks.

St Pauli / Reeperbahn is what you'd expect. Its the tourist magnet and populated with locals, sex shops....still a good night.

Travel on the underground. Don't buy a ticket. No bugger ever checks it. You never see an inspector. The locals don't seem to bother either. The Underground is in a loop so as long as you follow the U signs and not the S or A then you'll be fine.

    Can't think of owt else.

€60 per person fine if you do get caught, inspectors are often in plain clothes so you never know. A group ticket for up to 5 people costs €11.80 for a day, and is valid on buses, U Bahn (underground) and also river taxis, but not on tourist river boats and sightseeing buses. Agree about Sternschanze, loads of bars around there. Eppendorf is a bit further out but lots of more upmarket bars there.

The reeperbahn is a complete toilet but quite fun at night, especially the Irish bar whose name I forget.

Venture to the old bit of the city, loads of lovely buildings and people giving tours (free but they ask for money at the end, we gave 10 euros each as it was very well done). Portuguese quarter feels very Mediterranean and has some great restaurants. Really is a nice city considering how massive it is. Minitaur wonderland (model train/landscape) place was worthwhile at 13 euros.
