The thread about legends was a tough one to make a call on when selecting eleven, especially leaving certain players out. Who would you class as an unsung hero, maybe undervalued, but important to the team at the time?

My starter for ten is Brendan O'Connell

I started watching the Reds regularly in the mid-60's and without doubt John Bettany made that team tick. Good shout on that one.

Solid defenders are usually a good shout as unsung heroes.

So for me, Phil Chambers, Joe Joyce, Matty Appleby. More recently, Steve Foster.

My late Father always used to say "When Bettany plays well, Barnsley play well".

Similarly with my late Father who linked our good play to the performance of John Bettany. Bettany, like Darren Sheriden, was a late-comer to the professional game and just like Stumpy relished the opportunity he'd been given.

As a kid, I was baffled as to why some fans near us used to have a go at him all the time. For me, he always seemed to keep possession and rarely wasted a pass.

Shirley in the club shop when it was a hole in the wall near the away end. A seriously wonderful lady. Magicked up a ticket for me the day before the FA Cup 5th round match against Everton in 89 when my dad had only managed to get one for himself and I was absolutely devasted (I was ten). One junior ticket. Then got me and my brother both in on it. Amongst many, many other little things. A true BFC legend.

Ian Wardle. I threw the ball back to him from WSL in about 1989 and he said "Cheers lad". Wow! A Barnsley player spoke to me during a match! Big life event for a 9 year old that.

Fantastic call that. Agree. I got to know Shirley and her husband, Roger, really well during the 90s. He was also a lovely man and a kind of unofficial photographer for the club, and both ran coaches to away games which is how I got to know them as friends. He auctioned off a load of his work and other club memorabilia last year. I think they were silent victims of our fall into administration, but went beyond the call of duty for BFC. The silent heartbeat if you will.

McHale is held in high regard by Ronnie Glavin I believe. Said he was instrumental in many of our best performances, and was an underrated passer of the ball.
