Anyone go? Remember getting off the North Circular road too early and finding White Hart Lane. Thought we'd cracked it, but we were 2 miles away near Haringey Stadium. Mad sprint to get to game on time. Lost 5-3. If memory.serves we were never really in it. Surprised me when I looked it up..Crowd - 12000 . Other than that I just remember being so low down almost under the pitch on the away end (corner) .
I went. I can remember very little about it, except for peering through a lot of fencing. I seem to recall though, it was one of the games Ian Chandler scored in.
I was there. It was surreal. I seem to remember they hammered us, but then out of nowhere we pulled a couple of goals back and their fans got worried. I remember Ian Chandler scoring a goal by beating (fortuitously) their entire defence, including the goalkeeper. He then had a clear run on goal with the ball at his feet and the goalkeeper behind him on the ground. He only had to run the ball into the centre of the goal, but instead he want on a mazy dribble as if he were practising with some cones on the training ground. For some reason he took the ball wide, and it looked like he would dribble it out for a goal-kick, but then at the last second he coolly slotted it home from an extremely narrow angle. Well that's how I remember it anyway.
I was there. I remember Larry May (?) scoring a header from a corner, first time in about 1000 attempts. I was a young lad and a bit naive at the time so, arriving early, I thought I'd wait under the "Away supporters only" sign. A guy came up to me with "Spurs" and "Hate" tattooed on his fists asking if I was from Barnsley. Hard to deny given my accent, but it turned out he just wanted a report on the first game and ended up buying me a beer.
The return leg saw Spurs ease through in a high scoring match at White Hart Lane. Debutant Shaun Close hit Spurs into the lead and Glenn Hoddle extended the aggregate advantage after 30 minutes of the match. Defender John Beresford scored with a header to narrow the margin, but Tottenham were out of reach following goals from Hoddle and Waddle. Once more the visitors pulled a goal back with Larry May scoring in the 67th minute, but Clive Allen notched another to open up the four goal gap once more. A late Ian Chandler goal for Barnsley was nothing more than a consolation, but it sealed a very entertaining match. Teams : Spurs - Clemence, D. Thomas, Miller, Gough (P. Allen), M. Thomas, Roberts, Ardiles, Hoddle, Waddle, Galvin (C. Allen), Close Subs not used : Barnsley - Baker, Joyce, Cross (Ogley), May, Thomas, Beresford, Futcher (Hedworth), Chandler, Foreman, Gray, Agnew. I think clemence made a mistake for that goal if I remember rightly, slipped or something. We stopped at Luton on the way down and had a walk on their plastic pitch. Ground was deserted.
Didn't Ray Cemence's son play and get sent off when we beat Spurs in the FA cup in 97/98? Stephen Clemence.
Yes he did with raymondo and his mam watching from the west stand, sent off for diving in the penalty box if I recall correctly, sithi.
